Creating new folder in itunes...

I just want to know how to create a new folder in itunes and how to put songs in it? I know all the songs goes to your library, can you just drag and drop it in the new folder? If so, the song that you just put in the new folder...will it stay in the library?

Hi Gemini

Folders are used for grouping playlists, thus you cannot drag/drop one song into a folder. To create a new folder go to file->new folder.

will it stay in the library?

Yes, it will. Every track you see in iTunes appears in the library and stays there (unless you delete it), that's how iTunes works.

Gemini, welcome to discussions! In iTunes, File>New Playlist, an untitled playlist will appear in your source pane. You can drag & drop whatever songs you wish into the playlist. The songs remain in your main library.

The folders are used to help you organize your playlists, so you don't end up with a large number of playlists in your source pane. For me, I have one folder, called "favorite artists", in that folder is one sub-folder for Eric Clapton favorites, then I've got playlists for Favorite Females, Favorite Artist I, etc. Hope this helps! Post back if you have any questions.

Gemini, Welcome to the forums.

Songs in the Library remain in the library until deleted from ... The Library. It is the reference copy. All playlists essentiallly "point" to the library copy. Deleting an entry from a playlist deletes the pointer, not the file. You can hold down a modifier key and it will then delete from the Library too as well as any other playlists that refer to that track.

No, David, my folders were created on my PC. I only moved to an iMac 10 days ago, & transferred iTunes to the Mac.

To make a folder, iTunes>new folder, then you drag whatever playlists you already have into the new folder & give it a name. For instance, I have a folder called "Favorites" that I've put about 4 other playlists inside. It just cleans up the source pane where it doesn't look quite so "busy".
