Card reader doesn't appear on desktop

Hello, I'm new here.

Can anyone help please?

Having searched the forum, I decided to buy a USB card reader to transfer files from my Sony Ericsson camera-phone to my iMac OS 9.1. I bought an "Integral Mobile Card Reader" that claims OS9 compatabilty.

When I plug it in however, nothing shows up on the desktop. It shows up fine in Apple System Profiler > Devices & Volumes > USB1 - where it is listed as mass storage with driver number 2.0.9.

How can I get it to show up on my desktop so I can use it?

upton, welcome to Apple Discussions.

Common fixes for USB device issues (unrecognized, etc.)

Several years ago I purchased a new card reader, but had the same problem as you. Called the manufacturer's tech support, explained the problem & they sent me another reader (which worked). The card reader should work on any Mac OS without additional drivers.

Hi, Upton. Your card reader should appear on the desktop only if there's a card in it. When the reader is empty, you're not supposed to see it on the desktop.

Thank you Texas Mac Man and eww for you replies. No luck yet 😟

I have a sony m2 card in the reader, so that's not it.

The device seems to be recognised as it shows up in the System Profiler. Might this have something to do with "Extensions"? I'm not exactly sure what these are, but when I opened the Extension Manager (advice from an FAQ), I got this message:

"The selected set does not match the contents of your system folder. Do you want to update the selected set to match, revert to the selected set or create a new set that matches"

Then I noticed the are 5 different "My Settings" (from 1 to 5) in the "Selected Set" drop-down. Also, in the list of extensions there are 2 "Generic USB 2.0 Card Reader" items.

Seems very messy in there. Could this be relevant? (I inherited this machine 2 years ago and have never looked in the Extension Manager).
