Sep 15, 2008 4:54 PM in response to pjensen4by Toolbox222,I have the same problem. It happened when i was using max ripper to rip a CD... then I opened iTunes to download a podcast. iTunes tried to access the CD that was being ripped and it made a loud spinning noise and spit the CD out. I re-inserted it and now I have the same symtoms you're describing. After inserting a CD or DVD, about 10 seconds later, it spits it out. It's out of warranty, and I talked to a guy at an Apple store who said it sounded like the drive would have to be replaced, and buying an external was a cheaper alternative. Luckily I already had an external drive so my old G4 laptop could burn dual layer DVDs, so this is an inconvenience... but now that I had some spare cash, I was entertaining getting it fixed when I discovered there were many others experiencing similar problems.
It's almost acting as if the EJECT button was being held down. (I havent tried using a second keyboard yet to see if the key is broken, but this is doubtful as I said it happened when ripping a CD). I have tried doing a clean reinstall, even though i was sure it was a hardware related problem... Is there any diagnostic tool to run to see if everything is functioning properly?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sep 16, 2008 5:31 PM in response to pjensen4by Kgun30,i sincerely hope that it's a big enough problem, because my iMac is a year out of warranty. They actually barely kept me under it last year when my LCD display had a green line running down the side. So Among the drive ejecting almost every disk instantly, my faulty display, and now my graphics card, it's just becoming a never ending problem. I really hope that they just realize that this is a problem that is becoming more widespread and they decide to fix it for me, if not, I have no idea what the **** I'm gonna do. -
Sep 19, 2008 7:35 AM in response to pjensen4by badmf,Have a brand spankin' new 24" Imac running fine for 2 months, using OS X 10.5.5 and out of the blue this morning, it has the same symptoms as yours. Drive will not read or write anything: just spits'em right back out. Considering how many of us are experiencing this problem, could someone at Apple please get on this thread and give us an answer? -
Sep 29, 2008 9:00 AM in response to badmfby johnwesleybarker,I have the very same problem. My iMac will not accept any optical discs.
This is the 5th thread to which I have replied on this issue. Perhaps the Discussions administrator could make an exception and alert Apple Computer personel of the problem and try and suggest a fix?
Please.
Thanks. -

Wouldn't that be a miracle. Maybe with their stock taking a nose dive today we will see a bit of humility. I have always been a big Apple supporter and find their deafness on this issue very frustrating.
I need to purchase at least 5 more computers for our office. I was planning on 20" or 24" iMacs but I will stick with the Mini's if this issue is not resolved, let alone acknowledged.
Frustrated,

Sep 30, 2008 3:48 PM in response to pjensen4by Ryan Ericksen,I was blessed with a yellow vertical line and a constantly ejecting disc drive on my 2.5 year old 17" 1.83 imac. Have we been macintrashed?
Apple, please provide some input.
Thanks,

Sep 30, 2008 7:54 PM in response to pjensen4by gaz5021,Add me as well to the list of frustrated users whose drive now doesn't accept any disks. Not after one, six or fifteen tries. A couple of months after getting my brand-spanking 24" iMac.
Not happy.
Will be going through AppleCare soon to see if I can get it fixed, will reply back here with the result. -
Oct 12, 2008 7:18 PM in response to pjensen4by Valoir,So, where are we at with this issue? I have also noticed a disk drive problem for the last week - won't accept any disks, just spits it out. It is a Mat - R UJ825. Thanks for your info! -
Oct 25, 2008 9:18 AM in response to Valoirby rlr123,Add another to the list of recent imac's having CD /DVD acceptance problems. Some CD's work fine and some just get spit out after a short time of trying. Not age of CD related. Seems pretty random, but consistent with the CD (if a particular CD won't load, it will never load). Topic has already been covered with enough detail. I just want to add to the pile. -
Oct 26, 2008 9:11 AM in response to pjensen4by danomatic12,Add me to this list also, I have a 7 month old iMac 24" with a defective MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J (drive spits out disk after 7- 10 seconds) and sure its under warranty but its more the hassle of being without the computer for a number of days and trying to get the 24" behemoth to Apple.
In addition my optical drive also failed on my MacBook Pro Core Duo 1.83 but of course that was easy to take in to the Apple store and have the drive replaced but it leads me to a bigger question of some kind of massive failure of these types of drives. I'd almost rather have the old style slide out drawer drive, those type of drives didn't seem to have the failure rate that this type of drive has.
The other point I'll make is that I don't even use the optical drive as much as in the old days but when you need it "you need it"!!
Also looking down the list of subjects in this category, it's riddled with nothing but problems with optical drives! Apple take notice?? -
Oct 27, 2008 9:24 AM in response to pjensen4by SpT_King_James,I bought an iMac MB324LL/A last saturday. I'm from Brazil.
But I detected my Macbook MB403LL/A, bought on March 2008, has this problem.
Its optical drive, MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E, only reads every CD's, but doesn't read any DVD.
It is annoying and disturbing!
I wait a solution!
I will lead it to a service, because it is on warranty, but still is annoying!
Also frustrated,

Oct 28, 2008 12:35 AM in response to pjensen4by chityc09,Hi All,
I am having the same problem since last week. It is just out of the blue my superdrive don't read or write anymore. It kept on ejecting movie dvd, audio cd and empty cd.
I even updated my iMac with "Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update" but still no luck.
How come all of us are having the same problem at the same time? Is that the life span of the superdrive?

Oct 29, 2008 11:10 AM in response to chityc09by Nando RJ,Hi Guys
I just had my SuperDrive replaced yesterday under AppleCare at the *Oak Brook-ILL* store. It was actually supposed to take *3 to 5 business days*, but I gently asked the genius guy and Apple called the me *the next day* after I brought my iMac in.
*If your iMac is out of warranty it may be a huge problem*, as it was free in my case but they stapled the bill to the service sheet... probably expecting us to see the importance of having AppleCare.
*The bill was US$ 446.00* ... that's how much you may have to pay without warranty.
I don't know about any other authorized service place where you'd be able to get it done safely.
Good luck! -

Nov 3, 2008 3:47 AM in response to arunphotoby ColleensMacII,OK, so I dragged my 24" iMac all the way to the Apple store, which was over an hour drive away. Now, if that wasn't bad enough, I had to walk the entire length of the mall in order to get to the Apple Store. I had brought my "baby" in because of hard drive issues, and DVD/CD-r drive issues. (It wouldn't play ANYTHING, would inform me that any DVD I put into the drive, was EMPTY.)
SIX days later, I get my iMac back. (same long walk, same stares as I shleped it back out. I even ended up with bruises on the inside of my forearms from carrying the **** thing.)
Now, to add insult to injury, it still is NOT reading any disc I put in there.
NOW WHAT?
Apple, I loved you, but you're breaking my heart!
(BTW, I did get the Apple Care program, thank the gods!)
Anyone with any fixes yet?
