Mar 6, 2011 3:04 PM in response to pjensen4by Jurgh,Same problem here, it used to work OK. Now it only read/burns DVD's, where as CD's will be deleted. I this it has something to do with software updates like iTunes or 10.6.6... -
Mar 7, 2011 2:16 AM in response to pjensen4by roseros,Same problem since early 2009!At the beginning the Matshita superdrive accepted 3/4 of the CDs. Now, after 2 years of using, it doesn't work with 3/4 (and more) of the CDs (and I start to have problems with DVDs, too).
I use an old external Lacie (Pioneer) Firewire SD, working perfectly.
I'm an Apple user since 1994: I am really disappointed! -
Mar 8, 2011 8:13 PM in response to pjensen4by Chalgy,Same deal here. I bought a 27 incher in 2010 and occasionally have problems with any cds or dvds that me or someone else has written. They don't seem to mount and then I can eject them.
I've found 2 ways to get around this:
1) Restart the mac and it appears.
2) Run Disk Utility and it appears.
These certainly aren't solutions but they work. My iMac is under warranty. I will call soon, explain the problem, refer to this thread and get a solution.
What a drag. Jesus, Apple, this thread is almost 3 years old. Fix the problem. -
Mar 16, 2011 12:06 PM in response to Chalgyby andreisavu,OK, so the last thing you want is another addition to the list. Alas, here it is - my imac SuperDrive decided that it won't read anything - that includes the Leopard installation disk.
However, as I have Bootcamp with an alternative Win#$%*@dows OS, I gave it a try. Surprise - no problems thereMaybe the Apple software developers take a look at the code lines? C'mon guys, if THE OTHERS did it, you should be able to as well.

Mar 19, 2011 10:04 AM in response to chelandreamby cacce,I have the exact same problem and specs
It seems wierd that one laser head should be clear of dust and the other not if that now is the case ... reffering to the can of air trick.
It reads musik cds, but nothing else.
Driving me mad tbh -
Mar 22, 2011 1:19 PM in response to cacceby robert-13,It may not be the drive, for further confusion, see post at: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13267212#13267212 -
Mar 23, 2011 4:24 AM in response to pjensen4by RolyB,I've had the same problem with my iMac for over a year now (out of warranty of course). My Macbook is fortunately working okay so far. Rather than pay for Apple to replace the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875 drive I was thinking of buying an external optical drive. Does anyone know of a decent OD which is Mac compatible? -
Mar 23, 2011 8:24 PM in response to pjensen4by pschaf,Same with me too - 27" iMac purchased around October 2009. Unfortunately I am out of my warranty period. The problem started occurring a few months ago. Since my iMac is mounted to the wall, I can't easily take it into a genius bar either. Wish there was an easy fix for the issue... really frustrating. -
Apr 1, 2011 1:36 AM in response to pschafby ***jm***,Add me to the list. My imac (Jan 2008) has problems reading audio cds. It usually takes 5 or 6 attempts to get the cd to mount. Some it won't mount at all, though I guess that might be down to the quality of the cd as much as a software or hardware issue. -
Apr 1, 2011 4:34 AM in response to ***jm***by RolyB,Hi. Well since I last posted the message I've visited the local Apple Store and had the optical SuperDrive replaced. Even though the Mac is well passed the warranty period they did it free of charge. And they couldn't have been more helpful taking only a few hours to have the job done. I think this drive business is an issue with Apple computers although they wouldn't admit to it. I don't think it has anything to do with the type or quality of your CDs or DVDs.
If you're not too far from an Apple Store it might be worth your while paying them a visit. If I'd had to pay the bill it would have been £112.

Apr 7, 2011 6:28 PM in response to Michael Townsend4by Newkkl,Add me to the list - iMac accepted disks just fine until recently, and now nearly every disk I put in grinds horribly and is rejected. This includes games, music, dvds, blank disks, you name it.
I am unable to determine if the thing simply wore out, or if it is a problem tied to a recent software update.

Apr 9, 2011 5:06 PM in response to RolyBby zootrees,I have an iMac 8,1 24 inch and started having the this problem about year ago. I would always end up accepting the disc after inserting it sometimes up to 20 times.
I havent had this problem since upgrading from os x 10.5 to 10.6. I dont know if I am the only example of this. it was one of the nicest, and the least expected, changes from my os upgrade.
Good luck and hopefully apple or you yourselves get it all worked out. -
Apr 29, 2011 3:26 PM in response to pjensen4by JGrantPhoto,At least yours is seeing the disc eventually! Mine isn't seeing them at all and now my eject key doesn't even display when pressed. :/
Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, the drive has been acting up and today has totally quit functioning.
After reading various reports of issues with SuperDrive's in iMacs, I checked my "About this Mac" to see which drive I have and-are you ready for this?- it says there is NO drive installed. Say what?! I've had this computer for years and I can assure you it *DOES* have a SuperDrive! In fact, I just put a disc in it. But the computer disagrees.
I really don't relish the idea of having to lug this computer an hour to the nearest mac store but what choice do I have? Sigh. I'm sure I'm outside of warrenty as well.
Rebooting doesn't help. I am loathe to call AppleCare but I need my drive!

May 4, 2011 8:39 AM in response to pjensen4by wab109,Just so my voice is heard and put more pressure on Apple to show up with a response, the same problem started for me last week. I created a video movie of photos, work just as normal burning and playing, then a few days later my iMac won't accept any DVDs in any formate. I put one in the drive slot , it tries to mount and spits out after 4 or 5 seconds. I've looked all over and this seems to have been a problem for a number of years. Tried PRAM, Repair Disk, Power Off, no such luck and P!SS$$. And yes I'm out of warranty and from what I've read, even a few replacements have had the same issues after we few weeks. Rather then giving Apply more money to fix and replace, I may be more inclined to clutter my work space with an extenal! Any good recommendations?
