Q: Imac will not accept DVD's or CD's

When I insert a DVD or CD, after about 10 secs it spits it right back out. If I continue to insert the DVD or CD right after it ejects, the computer will finally accept it on about the 6th time and everything works fine. Is this a drive issue or software? any ideas?

Thanks

Imac, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

In a way I'm pleased to read all these posts as I thought it was just me being a silly (silver surfer lol). I have a 27" I-mac purchased in May last year - it's already been in for repair twice for the same problem. I have had the Optical drive replaced and still I'm having problems. If I try to rip a CD into I-tunes I cannot eject the disc unless I force quit, turn off the Mac, restart whilst holding the eject button down on the keypad - VERY 2012 technology - NOT!!!!

We have apple TV and the idea was to rip all my DVD's to the library but my MAC will not support Handbrake or any other ripping program - just makes a grinding sound and the disc sticks. This is so frustrating and it happened again last night except that when I tried to force quit there was a popping sound from the MAC and it blew all the power in the house - Mmm nice!!!

Called AppleCare (again) demanding a replacement immediately only to be told they have to have THREE repairs before they consider this. So off it goes again next week for perhaps 7-10 days then when the same thing happens - which it will - they may replace it.

Non of us in this thread should be tilting screens etc, it should work every time. Apple have an issue here and they should sort it out. I'm copying this reply to their H.O. in the USA demanding a replacement. Don't hold your breath but I'll keep you posted.

    Good luck.

Mine came back after 2 months (although that might have something to do with it having to be picked up by a different company first) and it still doesn't like disks.

Going to have to have it sent off again, but I'm going to have to wait until summer as I struggled with my uni work not having my mac to use.

That's just so bad I hope you get it sorted soon. There is an obvious issue with disks and they should put this right . They don't mind taking your money upfront but when there is a serious problem they don't help at all. I can assure you I WILL get a replacement even if I have to stand outside our Apple Store with the offending MAC and a note around my neck telling people NOT to purchase one - I will. I'll keep you posted.

Add me to the list. And if anyone from apple reads this I would like to let you know that a friend ask me the other day if he should buy a iMac and after my troubles with my super drive and reading many threads, on this site and others, about how unreliable the cd/DVD drives are over the years I'm going to have to tell him NO. I love everything that apple company make and I own almost everything but I cann't believe you will not fix the on going problem. I guess my next computer will be a pc for half the price of my iMac.

My iMac is a late 2009. I put a toshiba external usb DVD.R on it when new and have been happy as a clam.  I think it was $50 bucks.  Never been a fan of the side loader DVD drive.

    Add me to the list.

The machine is an out-of-warranty 24" iMac .

Originally, the Pioneer superdrive would make strange noises and not read or eject the Disk. I managed to get the stuck disk out but  the drive wouldn't read any other disk, ejecting them after 10 seconds. I swapped it for a UJ875 drive but that is the same, tries to read the Disk but spits it out after 10 seconds. To test the drives, I popped them into a laptop. The first Pioneer drive would not read any disks and spat the disks out but the second UJ875 drive accepted and read every disk I threw at it. Put it back in the iMac but it still would not read any disks and spits them out.??

Now I am thinking is it the Mainboard, Ribbon, Interface, software issue...?

The optical drive shows in System preferences as normal, they just won't read any disks.

Any advice any one can offer would be gratefully received as I am a Pc Technician and not familiar with Apple iMacs.

    Thanks, Gary

Well, just got my MAC back and have had ANOTHER optical drive replaced (machine not even a year old). They told me in the Apple store that I was a 'Long Way' off of a replacement - nice !!!!  Let's see if it holds out.

Note to igazz.  It seems they do have some issues with their optical drives as mentioned my machine in not a year old and I have had my optical drive replace twice. Good luck with your problem.

Had my iMac Inter core duo, 1st gen since 2006. Hardly used the super drive yet it developed the same symptoms, then finally quit. Naturally it was out of warranty.

Found a used Super Drive (Pioneer) on ebay, instaled it, and it's been fine now for about three years.

Apparently an ongoing problem with Imac, but  Apple won't admit to it.

As much as this has been a serious workhorse, that has been the only problem, but I am not sure if I'd get another iMac...

At one point in time I had a genius tell me there WAS a factory problem with the ribbon to the super drive, but they wanted $115 to replace it. So I opted for a Lacie fire wire for $20 less.

(Now is it just me or is this the only place you can type something and the auto spell does not work?)

Add me to the list as well. 27inch iMac (december 2010) out of warranty. I have the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H and it reads audio cd, blank cd and blank dvd but just spinning on anything else. Really can't see how apple can see this as anything other than a manufacture fault.

£1649 i spent on this machine just over a year ago..

    Not happy

late 2009 27" iMac.  Movie DVD's will not play but software CD's will. Is this the same issue you are dealing with or is there a work around for this?

We bought an iMac in May 2011 for my wife's Open University coursework and the first set of DVDs read so slowly it was like having a cassette tape drive again. It was only when the second set of course DVDs came and wouldn't read at all that I realised the optical drive was faulty, as an external USB drive read  all of the DVDs perfectly well.

This is so annoying, because although there is Applecare on it my wife simply cannot be without the machine for weeks or months while they try, and probably fail, to fix it.

My IMac has just had it's second optical drive installed and at the moment seems OK but this happened before so waiting (and hoping)it stay that way. Apple really do seem to have an issue with the optical drive and you really would think with the 'billions' they make out of us that they would get this sorted. We took our machine to the local store, booked in on line and was only in for 24 hours. Have you tried this route yet.

If my drive goes again I will be INSISTING on a replacement - yea like that will happen lol.Good luck.

All this time later and like the notorious wireless Internet connection problem, Apple has not seen fit to address the issue of DVDs. No wonder Steve Jobs wanted to do away with DVDs a few years ago---Apple couldn't make a computer that could play one. I have to say that my old, slow, abused Windows laptop from 2003 has no problems playing any DVDs nor connecting to the Internet wirelessly.

I purchased a USB connected DVD player for the Mac. Works fine---better than the Mac ever did even when it halfway worked. I connect to the Internet via wire. I know of no other fix, and apparently neither does Apple nor anyone else.

So has Apple ever responded to this thread! I just started having this problem at the year mark of having my iMac. Seriously ticked off. I am with the military overseas, lets say no Apple Store in site so how do I get this fixed? Can anyone tell me what brand/model they used to replace the superdrive? How easy is it to change out? Any help would be great if Apple doesnt care to help. Thanks!
