Feb 18, 2009 8:09 AM in response to pjensen4by theGraphicsGuy,I have just started having the same issue with my 24 inch iMac. It will still read DVDs (even badly smudged), but won't read audio CDs or application discs. I got one CD to read after inserting multiple times, but haven't been able to repeat that. I thought this might be related to the recent system update, but I'm beginning to suspect that that isn't going to be the case. Bummer. -
Feb 24, 2009 4:27 AM in response to pjensen4by lost_misfit,I just have the same issue: I insert iLife08 Install DVD and after some annoying noises it comes out again.
So I called the support hotline of Apple here in Austria and a woman told me that it would not be the drive.
I could just repeat myself that I have read this thread and that in my Powerbook G4 the same iLife08 Install DVD is working fine, but on my 24" iMac NOT.
Well she told me there is no pick up service and I have to pay if the drive does have nothing when I bring it to the sellersupport. Fine...Now I have to wait until the drive ejects more and more CDs or DVDs, so I can bring it in...

Feb 27, 2009 9:13 AM in response to lost_misfitby Hector Julio,Another casualty here in Spain. a year ago I replaced the superdrive unit, and since yesterday, when ended a system installation / restore, it fell completely, fortunately, everything was already installed.
Now I think that I have to send the whole computer to an Apple SAT. Any ideas to fix it without sending to Apple SAT? -

Just bumping this issue. I have the same problem with my 24" iMac. It has a Matshita UJ-875 optical drive in it. I'm about ready to call Apple Support and open up a case with them. -

Well, I called Apple Support and opened up a case. (I'm sure glad I purchased the AppleCare Protection Plan, as my standard warranty is just about up!)
After having me run through some standard troubleshooting techniques (unplug all peripherals, reset the PMU/SMC), the Apple Support representative with whom I was working admitted that this problem with the optical drive is a known issue. He even referenced some internal documentation they have regarding the problem.
He directed me to take the iMac to the closest Apple Retail Store for them to replace the drive. -
May 5, 2009 7:43 AM in response to AlexYPby Marcelo Mega,My iMac 2,16, late 2006, at first did not recognised some CD, then it starts up alone sometimes!! Last week it becomes to freeze, whole system… but it start up again latter. But continuous to freeze. Hardware test: 4SNS/1/4000000:VDOR.
What about a recall from Apple? -

May 13, 2009 9:15 PM in response to Weeblerby Reverend Rock,Sounds like you guys have the same problem as I. My Imac is also 3 months out of Warranty, I didn't choose to go with the Apple Care as my first Mac, way back when, never had any problems, it just got out of date so I went through two PC's in between, both Dell's and both junk. I was so excited to get this imac 24, Never really used the disc drive, but recently I bought my first Ipod so started using it after having it just over a year. It was really noisy, almost sounded like a small toy airplane propeller spinning, then it finally read, but instead of spitting it back out, after reading it, It kept the disc. I tried everything the Mac website suggested to retrieve the disc, I called the Mac number, where the tech guy told me that because I had just started using it, and because I didn't opt for the Apple Care that they could pick up the cost of the part, but I would have to pay for the labor. Although I wasn't happy, I decided, It's better than nothing, They made the appointment for me to take it in and get it diagnosed first, and told me to call him with the diagnosis. After lugging it into the mall, and waiting for a short wait, I was told, yes the disc drive was bad and that it needed to be replaced. The drive was going to be around $300. and the labor $150ish. What??!!!! $150. to open a computer and hook up a ribbon cable??? Fine!!! So I call the guy back up and tell him the news, he then tells me he spoke with other tech's at the call center and that they weren't going to cover the part. What???!!!! He just told me they would... Now I am really ****** and will be calling the Customer Care people... also I plan to call the better business bureau and write to whomever will listen. And this discussion.. seeing how many people are having the same troubles, with obvious faulty disc drives.. gives me plenty of ammo... just think how many others are out there who haven't written in. I still love me Mac, but I hate the people who run the company, and feel that a company that was nearly dead in the 90's brought back to life through the thanks of people like us buying their wares, should be a little more caring to their customer base, especially seeing this isn't one or two isolated cases. -

The local Apple Store had my iMac for one day. They replaced the optical drive for +no charge+ (yeah AppleCare extended warranty!) and now it works wonderfully. Had I not had the extended warranty, the repair would have cost several hundred dollars. (Side note: I used my education discount to purchase the AppleCare extended warranty for just over $100. With this repair, the AppleCare extended warranty has easily paid for itself, even if I never use the warranty again.)
The drive they replaced was manufactured by Panasonic/Matsushita. Panasonic/Matsushita must have had a run of bad drives that they shipped to Apple.
I'm one happy customer.
*To all of you with bad optical drives in your recent model iMacs:* call up Apple Support or make an appointment at your local Apple Store's Genius Bar. I don't think you'll find any other long-term solution than this one in this thread. -
May 18, 2009 6:00 PM in response to pjensen4by David Dumais,Add another 24" iMac to the list. My drive was working for awhile, and now it seems to be very selective about which discs it wants to read.
I just purchased the new Silversun Pickups album. Freshly out of the package and into the disc drive, it refuses to read the disc. But then I put Death from Above 1979, it reads it fine. Confused, and thinking about purchasing the apple care before it's too late. -
May 22, 2009 8:02 AM in response to pjensen4by A_rod,My 20" iMac aluminum is also choosing which CDs it likes to read and which ones it doesn't. In fact, I have a lot of my live concerts that are 4 discs or so, and it will usually read 3 of the 4 discs or something. Its pretty ridiculous actually, how come apple hasn't put a recall on this! This is in sane the amount of people with this problem! Please do something about it! -

I would recommend it. It will be cheaper to purchase AppleCare than to pay for the optical drive to be replaced. -

Ultimately, we don't know the specifics. We don't know what percentage of the population of iMac owners is actually experiencing this issue. As of this writing, there are roughly 90 posts in this thread. If we were to pretend that each post were from a unique person indicating that his iMac were having this problem, that would only be 90 people having talked about the problem in this thread; 90 people does not a recall make, nor does it indicate how widespread the problem is among the non-Apple-forum-posting population.
It is nice to talk about recalls--it feels good, I agree--but Apple is, first and foremost, a business. There must be a business case for issuing a recall. When there is, you can bet that Apple issues a public recall. Until then, handling issues such as this through the normal Support and Repair channels is industry standard. -
