Ethernet cable unplugged

My wired internet has stopped working - internet connect says the ethernet cable is unplugged (it isn't). I have tried a different cable and a different port on the router. Rebooted router and macbook. Reset the pram and system management unit. Ran hardware test and it shows no problems. What else can I try?

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.5.4), 2.6Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 2Gb ram

I just ran into the same problem. I was able to resolve it by changing my location at the top of the window to automatic. I had tried to install a Verizon dial-up service using my cell phone a while back, and it still had the NationalAccess option selected. Double check that, just to make sure, otherwise it looks as though your ethernet card may be bad. Unfortunately, those sort of things just happen sometimes.

This happened to me today as well. All of a sudden ethernet was dead. I tried all the tricks in the book, PRAM, Safe boot, deleting all prefs there are connected to network settings, un-installed Vmware, checked the pins, tried 9 different cables and locations, manual DHCP settings, All manual settings, removed Ethernet and created a new in network prefs, checked all of today's log files, all in vain. My good, this computer is no more then 10 days old. I'm in the middle of the planet's largest annual climate change meeting.... Any suggestions, apart from those things I've already tried here?

Ended up getting nowhere and had to take it to the Apple store where they swapped it out with a new MBP, transferred data, etc. They said it's basically a bad logic board, so the only solution is to exchange the entire machine so they're not replacing a $1200 part in a weeks-old computer. The exchange was hassle-free and handled very well.

Another victim here; new macbook pro (late 2008) and the ethernet port has gone dead again! I had it into the Apple store once and they replaced the logic board about 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, this problem reared itself again and now I'm hoping Apple will simply send me home with a new machine.

The only thing that makes sense to me is if these controllers are in some way susceptible to surges from an ethernet cable. The interesting thing is that I had an older MacBook Pro connected to this same port for almost 2 years without any previous issues on the older hardware.

Extremely disappointing experience @ the Apple Store today; although they will order yet another logic board to fix the Ethernet port, they were unwilling to exchange it for a new machine on account of the fact that I had upgraded the original hard drive and memory with parts from OWC. They told me that if I had the original parts in the machine, they would have given me a new machine right away. This effectively means that no one should upgrade their Macs and expect Apple to honor their normally excellent customer service track record. I asked the Genius what I should do if the next logic board blows out. His response, was that they would continue replacing boards until the problem stopped.

Uggh!

I purchased my MBpro at the end of Nov 08. I just got mine back from the Apple Store for the second time. Apple replaced the logic board the first time. They may done it again the second time too. Surprised they wouldn't give me a new machine, but I never asked. Next time, I'll ask. If the port goes out again, not sure what to do. There doesn't appear to be a solution yet.
