Component vs. SDI - qualityloss?

I’m going to get some interface card for one of the other monitors here. The stiff price of the SDI interface card holds me back, while the component interface card is so inexpensive I could buy it plenty of times before I would have spent as much as the SDI one cost.

Is SDI REALLY that much better than component? I mean – will it hit me in the face like quality on composite vs. component does?

I think so. Remember, component is analog so your video is undergoing a digital to analog conversion. SDI is just that, digital, so there is no conversion. SDI/HDSDI is expensive but also, consider the quality of the monitor that you're installing the SDI card in.

I'd like to get the BKM sdi interface for my PVM at home but just haven't spent those bucks yet, there's always something that comes up.

Congrats on the Blackmagic card by the way. Nice product.

I tend not to be as militant about component monitoring out of a Blackmagic or Decklink card as I am about digitizing via SDI outputs from tape decks. The latter I absolutely insist upon.

But a good pro monitor should display SDI or component just as well - after all the SDI card in a monitor ends up putting out a component signal to the monitor. It's just a question where in the chain it happens.

One would think so but I've seen hd monitors that are soft when monitoring a component analog hd signal. I am of the opinion that flat panels are a lot more finicky about component vs. sdi signals than crt monitors.

I think its probably the Analog/Digital step. The other thing to beware of when piping around CAV is group delay. Its not wildly critical for monitoring only, but if one were to start trying to use it for mastering/digitizing, then it would be mportant to make sure that everything is arriving on time.

SDI is not optional for me, since I do a lot of mastering and digitizing.

There are a couple of cards for this monitor. The SDI card will give a better picture than the standard composite or the s-vid that comes standard as well as a component card. There is also the added benefit of being able to de-embed the audio as well, so no matter what video card you may be using the audio and picture should always be in sync!

BTW you would need the more expensive 17" model to display HD
