akamai (is sneaking in and out)! I feel violated!

I've noticed that the company akamai, under diverse domain names are posing (possible legitimately) as an apple update mirror, and making some odd/random Firefox connections (but not for updates) . . .

I've caught Software Update trying to connect to them:

I've caught Firefox trying to connect to them:

I did some 'whois's on some of their domains I've seen being connected to:
public.reducis.org/info/akamaistream.rtf
public.reducis.org/info/akadns.rtf
public.reducis.org/info/edgesuite.rtf

I went to wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akamai_Technologies

I went to their website:
http://www.akamai.com/

I realize that they do content delivery ... So am I just supposed to let all of my software connect to whatever they feel like? I guess I'm fine with apple updating my software from their equipment/sites but otherwise how am I to know what is legitimate and what is not?

This is comparable to me having my furnace fixed, the furnace company contracting out to XXX random company, and me walking into my basement to find Joe Sixpack in my house doing whatever he feels like ...

I guess my real question then is, how do I force updates from apple.com only ... or am I overreacting?
