My PC doesn't recognize my ipod or in ITUNES

Alright, well I have an old ipod, when I plug it into USB it charges and my pc makes the noise that it recognizes the IPOD, but it freezes up MY computer and Itunes and when I unplug it, Itunes says in order to use the ipod I need to reformat it or restore it, but when it's plugged in, it freezes Itunes and my computer so I can't do so. I plugged the ipod in on 3 computers and all do the same. I even put the Ipod in disk mode but it still freezes it, how can I format my ipod, (it says it's corrupt) is there a program I can download to format it?

Hp, Windows Vista, Fast
