help fatal error w/itunes setup

Hello,

I am having problems uninstalling itunes. Originally I was trying to upgrade itunes b/c my itouch would not load up to my itunes while my ipod video would just fine. While trying to upgrade i got a bunch of error messages and then other components of itunes wouldn't work and I would get an error message every time i tried to open itunes (it would still open but i'd get the error message first, plus the itunes store wouldn't load either. all this lead me to try and uninstall itunes, which has become a hellish mission. I have windows xp and i uninstalled itunes through regedit, then i did a search removing all ipod, itunes, apple, quicktime, etc. related material from my computer. the only things that refused to be deleted were the mozilla plugins that had to do w/ itunes and in the control panel add/delete option it will not allow me to remove an itunes setup that went wrong. every time i try to delete it a message pops up that says "there was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete this installation." and "Fatal error during installation."

Now, since getting rid of everything but those two files i am trying to reinstall the new version of itunes from apple.com and am getting nowhere. everything is error this or unable to uninstall that... i dont know what to do and i am completely blank on what my next step should be. all i want to do is set the new version of itunes onto my pc so my ipods can sync up properly and all the itunes features work like they should.

I am not sure I followed all that. 🙂

Did you try using the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility? That often allows you to get past uninstall problems.

Here is a method for removal and cleanup:

== uninstall with cleanup ==
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/

Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
XP
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925

Vista
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.

When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete and file or folder called Quicktime.

Restart your PC.

Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)

Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.

restart your PC

Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.

If it does, install iTunes.
