Carrier settings update won't install

After I click install I get the following message:

"iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. An unknown error occured (0xE8000001)."

Carrier is SoftBank, Japan.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.4), iPhone 3G, 2.0.1 (SoftBank, japan)

I also got this error message this morning after I had updated to 2.0.1. I did not have time to try a second time, but on another site someone mentioned that they spoke to someone from Apple and they said this was often caused with a dock issue and suggested plugging the jack straight to the iphone rather than through a dock. He said this solved the issue. I will try when I get home from work and post to let you know.

Cheers,

TFB

i think this relates to your carrier giving u a 2.0.1 setting file...
but in my case I am with Optus in Australia..and heard on the aussie thread that it doesnt matter that u dont have the latest carrier settings files...
so...IMO dont worry too much about it..
maybe the carrier may at some point in the future update their settings...
but nothing to be worry about

I have the exact same problem on the exact same network (Softbank, Japan). Same error message and everything.

I too don't use a dock to connect so that isn't the issue.

Has anyone with a moderately good grasp of Japanese tried calling Softbank yet? (Yeah I know, I cringe at talking to those people too)

I think I'd like to be sure that the carrier update is not needed from Softbank here in Japan rather than take my chances. Phone companies are Nazis out here. I'd hate to have a non-functional phone just because I was having a problem with the update.

However, since my phone is still plugging along, it may be exactly the same type of issue as in Australia. But you get my point.
