Out of curiosity - for those who the update failed which third party applications (if any) did you have installed?

Im having the same problem.. i tried restoring my iphone 3g multiple times.... My girlfriend and I each own one... the sad thing is this would have never happened if i didn't want to add songs to her phone for her... the update killed our phones... this is a big disappointment and would like some answers

And no i did not mod our phones... drop it... abuse it... this is a phone out of the box... an honest consumer with disappointing results

I had the same issue. I tried 3 times to restore. No luck. I then restarted my machine, it seemed to help as the restore went further before the error message popped back up.

I then shut my computer down for about an hour. Powered it back up and my phone was restored. Just wanted to share as I was pretty upset too....(I just brought the phone home)

I've not had any problems this morning, it downloaded (very fast!) and went straight on. I can't say I've noticed anything different except they seem to have sorted that split second lag on the contact list when you first go into it.

Is there a list of specific updates anywhere?

Jayzeballos how did you restore the iPhone in DFU mode?
I tried everything with my iPhone3G 16GB white system reboot, fw 2.0, FW 2.0.1, normal mode, DFU mode, 3 mac's and 1 WinXP all no luck (1604 error). Is there a link to iPhone1,22.0_5A345Restore.ipsw maybe it will get past the 1604 error :?

Thanks Michael for this posting! I was able to successfully restore after using the download you mention. Steps I had to take on Windows XP:

1.) Download your link to my hard drive
2.) Hard shut down iPhone (hold home button and power key simultaneously)
NOTE: Make sure phone is off before proceeding (sometimes this hard shutdown results in phone automatically rebooting)
3.) With phone off, hold home key and plug into USB (no power key needed)
NOTE: iTune was already up and running -- not sure if this would matter
4.) On Windows XP, hold the <Shift> key (no "option" key on a PC keyboard) while clicking the "restore" button in iTunes
5.) This brought up the file browser, so I selected your download from step 1

After the successful restore, was given the option to restore my last backup.

Exactly the same happened here. Just synced data, noticed update, installed it, no phone anymore. 1604 error...

well after waiting 90 minutes at the Apple store, it was decided I would have a new iPhone (in 24 to 48 hours 'cause they didn't have any in stock). They tried on 3 different MAC and it still wouldn't restore properly. Unfortunately, Rogers can't exchange units so You have to go to Apple Store and I was lucky enough that someone at the genius Bar (tech support) canceled so I got in the free spot.. otherwise I would've had to wait 24 hours to get an appointment. sigh I was the first in montreal to report such a problem... They didn`t believe me at first but after a few trials of their own they said it could`ve been a chip defect which was triggered by the update????

anyhow.. a new iPhone is on the way.

too bad it`s taking so long... not good for business users

I downloaded the file above and followed the steps, unfortunately it's stuck at the "Verifying iPhone software" stage and the phone itself has the usb cable and itunes logos on it. So far that's about as far as I've been able to get. Looks like I will be going to the apple store tomorrow.

this is not good...if this problem is widespread Apple going to have the biggest PR/customer service blunder on their hands.

My phone (iphone 2G) was working just fine most of the day today, but when I tried to update a few apps (though the app store on the phone) it froze up and is now bricked. I have tried all of the suggestions in this thread and all I get it the opening "apple logo." I left the phone alone for several hours and nothing. It locks up itunes too. At one point in time itunes unfroze and showed my phone. I noticed that the graph at the bottom of the phone section showed that I had 7 GB of "other" on my phone and no music or movies. This is very wrong as I had less than 100 mb of apps on my phone. I love apple, but this is going to be a disaster if they unintentionally bricked thousands of phones with this update.
