When ever I try to update over the air the app will download, but when it starts to install an error message appears that say to download in iTunes from your computer.
So when I do download from my computer and sync it, everything goes smooth untill the end, then a box appears with all the apps that had an update and says they could not be installed because of an error. The error code is 0xE 80000E.

Has anyone else had this problem?
Any ideas?

Yes, I had the same problem and here is the OFFICIAL Apple reply.
First, they acknowledge it IS a problem with iTunes.
When you have an application that needs to be UPDATED
DELETE it from the iPhone
DELETE it form the iTunes Application folder
Sync
Now go to the store and get the latest version.
Sync

All should now be fine.

I had 3 programs where this was occuring, Texas Holdem, I Am Here, and iDrink.

The process worked fine.

Hope it works for you.

Well, I just tried these suggestions, but had a few problems.

First I tried it with a free app - Midomi. When I re-downloaded from the App Store it said something like, you already purchased this so go ahead and download it again with no charge.

I did that, but when I re-synched, Midomi was nowhere to be found on the iPhone.

I was still getting the 80000E error for a purchased app, Emerald Chronometer. So I followed the same steps, but this time when I attempted to re-download it from the App Store it said something like, do you want to purchase this application and pay for it? (I gladly paid the first time, but didn't want to purchase it twice).

So I restored the deleted Emerald Chronometer application from the iTunes applications folder, re-synched.

Now everything syncs without reporting errors - but both applications - Midomi and Emerald Chronometer no longer appear on my iPhone.

Maybe time for a full restore from backup? Or will that just send me back to the 80000E problems again?

Thanks for any insights...

So glad I found this thread. Thanks for the tips. I was getting the same problem for several apps (error 0xE800002E in my case) and did "report a problem" to Apple who tried to help but in the end gave up and said go and book a Genius at an Apple store.

What seems to happen is that if you have the Applications tab for your phone set to Sync All Applications, during this process, iTunes changes it to Sync Selected Applications with the one you have just downloaded deselected, so it doesn't get copied. Another bug!

Also, it's worth knowing that if you delete an app you have paid for, when you go to download it again, although it appears that you are going to have to pay for it again, when you click buy (the second time I think) it does allow you to download again for free.

I called Apple and the rep said the problem was because I was using an old dock. He said that the dock slowed USB communications between the phone and my MacBook, and suggested I tried synching without a dock.

I did - same error.

But I figured out a better way - still annoying because you lose all your app settings when you update. Credit goes to http://www.damienkomala.com/v6/unkown-error-on-the-iphone/ which I found mentioned in another Apple discussions thread on this problem.

1. Dismiss the error. Select the Applications tab from your iPhone in iTunes.
2. Chose "Selected applications" to sync manually.
3. Deselect the application(s) mentioned in the error message. This will remove them from the iPhone.
4. Sync.
5. Reselect the application(s) you deselected previously.
6. Sync.

All is well, until the next update.

I think I found a fairly simple method of taking care of this error. I tried both methods described below and they both worked. In no case did I have to re-download the apps. I just made sure that I had the correct (latest) version.

While in the iTunes Application tab of the connected iPhone...

Method One:
1) Delete the suspect app(s) from the iPhone.
2) Uncheck the app(s) in iTunes
3) Sync
4) Check the app(s) in iTunes
5) Sync
-----

Method Two:
1) Uncheck the app in iTunes
2) Sync
3) Check the app in iTunes
4) Sync

What appears to be occurring is that iTunes has a hard time gaining "permission" to delete the app when UPDATING. It still appears to be able to delete the app if you uncheck it first and allow a "complete" deletion before updating in the second sync. In either case once the app is no longer present on the iPhone, the update proceeds normally.

Buggy software - seems like Apple's success is making times difficult for them. QA needs work.
