Help with accessing trash via target disc mode please

Hi, accidentally trashed the system folder on my powerbook and was advised to try booting from another Mac and then retrieve the system folder from the trash. I’ve booted up with my old imac using target mode but it doesn’t seem to allow me to access the trash to retrieve the folder. 😟

I’ve then tried copying the system folder from my imac (also 10.3.9) to my powerbook to see if that would get it to start up but no joy. My powerbook just keeps starting up in old OS9.

Can anyone offer me some more help please?
Thank you.
Gary.

Hi, glock.

No, I wouldn't expect that to be successful. The System folder on the iMac is configured for that hardware, not the Powerbook's.

With the Powerbook connected to the iMac in Target Disk Mode, double-click the Trash icon on the iMac. Everything in the Trash on both hard drives — the iMac's and the Powerbook's — will appear in the Trash window that opens. Drag the System folder that you find there to the Powerbook's hard drive icon (be sure it's the PB's drive icon, or you'll foul the iMac up too) and drop it. You will be asked whether you want to replace the one that's already on the Powerbook's drive, which is the one you copied from the iMac. OK the replacement. Now you should have the right System folder back in place on the Powerbook. Shut down, disconnect the Firewire cable, and try to boot the Powerbook normally again. I don't know whether or not it will work after all this mucking around, but it's worth a try. Let us know how it goes.

Hi, thanks for the fast reply eww!

I should have mentioned I've tried looking in the imac trash. To be sure I've just restarted both machines and tried looking in the imac trash again while in target mode but I'm afraid nothing at all from the powerbook trash was in there. Its not looking good. 😟

Is there any other things I could try? I'd be gutted to loose all of the photos on my powerbook.

Thank you.
Gary.

Sounds like you emptied the Trash on the Powerbook, somewhere along the line.

Copy any files you want to save from the Powerbook's hard drive to the iMac's in Target Disk Mode. If your pictures are stored in an iPhoto library, copy the iPhoto Library folder that you'll find in your user account's Pictures folder, *intact, as a single unit*, from one disk to the other. Copying an iPhoto Library piecemeal always destroys the database that iPhoto has constructed to record how you've organized the pictures.

After you've copied over whatever you want to save, start the Powerbook up from your OS X installer discs, erase the drive, and reinstall everything on it from scratch.

I just tried that out here, and the Trash from the Target computer does not show up on the Host computer by opening the Trash icon on the desktop. What worked was I opened a finder window and typed in Trash in the search field, selected the Target Disk and it brought up .Trash, which contained the Trash items in the Target computer.

Hi cornelius, I also tried searching for trash in the finder but all it brought up was some application giffs and a few speakable items. I'm not having much luck at all!lol

I've just copied over my iphoto library as suggested by eww so at least it’s not a total loss now 🙂 , I suppose most of the other stuff can be replaced. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to offer helpful suggestions.

Hi Gary:
I also tried searching for trash in the finder but all it brought up was some application giffs and a few speakable items.

Here's what I did.
• Boot affected computer into FW-TDM with other Mac as host
• Open a Finder window (Command + Shift + H opens Home window)
• In the Search field on the top right type in "Trash"
• In the bar the opens below the search field Select your Target disk, likely Macintosh HD
• Look for a file .Trash in the main pane
• Double click .Trash to open a new window with the Target Drive's Trash
• Drag items you wish to rescue into the FW-HDD (Target Disk) icon in the sidebar.

Hope this works for you.
