3G vs Edge

Okay, i'm not too clear of the 2. I read that turning off 3G will improve your battery life. Is this true?

What is 3G exactly? And what is Edge?

Thanks

Just cellular technology, simple as that. Each newer technology supports higher data rates. GPRS is slowest, then Edge, then 3G.

Turning off 3G (which automatically downgrades to Edge) does save battery because the internal circuitry for 3G requires more power to use. So if you're using the new iphone for just simple phone calls/texting, it's best to turn off 3G to conserve battery.
