Backup Naming

Anybody else getting weird names for their backups in Prefs in iTunes? Mine lists my phone as "Unknown" and gives the date as 12/31/00 6:00. I've tried several backups with the same result and it kinda says to me "don't try to restore this!" Of course backups take hours and hours and don't exactly inspire confidence that they are doing anything.
Also has anyone noted that Time machine does not back up your phone Backup files? So without an iTunes valid, not corrupted backup you are out of luck.
