Printing .pdf files on Samsung, GDI or "SPL" printers

I'm using OS 10.4.9 (because of Pro Tools - don't ask!) and I just bought a Samsung CLX3160FN multifunction color laser printer. Imagine my surprise when it wouldn't print from either Adobe Reader nor Preview. I spent two hours on the Support line with Samsung before they finally came up with the explanation. Apparently, Samsungs use a proprietary language called "SPL" (for Samsung Printer Language - what hubris!) that is the same as Microsoft's GDL. In any event, Reader and Preview require PCL6 files, whatever THOSE are. ANYWAY, I found the fixes at this site: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/samsung-gdi

You have to install three applications but it works. I can now print those files. Hoorah for the Linux Foundation! Way to go, guys (and gals!)

Doesn't it seem weird that any company making printers would send one out into the world that didn't print .pdfs? Whack. It's like a car that won't go backwards AND forwards. Bi-zarro at best. Non?

Thanks for the tip! 🙂

GDI/SPL is purely to cut down on the cost of the Printer, it "draws" the page on the computer then sends that to printer, whereas Postscript, PCL and such sends the commands & definitions to printer, then the printer's CPU draws the picture.

Search spl on this page for a quick explanation of it...
