How do I find what zip code I'm currently in?

On the 3G is there a way Maps can tell me what zip code I'm in?

Some store web sites ask for the zip code or street address to find their nearest location to you. I don't always know the address where I'm at but still want to find the nearest store near a job site for example.

I couldn't find an app in the appstore that does this either.

sfdesigner,

You can use the built-in map application to look for businesses near you. First, bring up a map of your general area, then in the search box put the name of the business, type of business, etc into the search field, and it will look for the nearest results, zooming out a little bit if it needs to to get a few more results.

You can then tap on the results and be linked to the information that often includes street address, phone number, and sometimes website. The phone number can be tapped to dial, or the web address can be tapped to open it in Safari.

If you want to look outside the current map view you can add location information to the search box such as city, state or zip code.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

EDIT: This is not new to iPhone 2.0, it has been there since 1.0. An example of it is in the "Calamari" iPhone commercial

That would definitely get me the info but I was thinking there might be an easier way still.

I should mention I'm usually browsing, or shopping, on my desktop computer when I find a reason to wonder what zip code (or sometimes what area code) I'm currently in.

Seems like once I find a product online I'm interested in buying locally I should go to a map site and enter my location manually then type in the name of the business to search for in the area.

Perhaps you missed the part where he indicated that he wants this on his iPhone (this is the iPhone board after all). Lolz

Anyhoo, if you're in Maps, you could try searching for something like restaurants and the entry will show the full address with zip. Also you could get any number of apps that are location aware and some will show you the zip code. BoxOffice does it for sure, as do the other movie showtimes apps.

Thanks for the info. Using Maps or YPmobile I now know how to get the info with just a few clicks.

Just to clarify for others, my desktop workstation changes whenever I start a new contract at a different company. I'm not always on my home desktop searching for products.

Might be an idea for an app - one click shows current location zip code and telephone area code along with other info.

Thanks for the insights.

There is a free app called "Where", the Starbucks function has both location zip code and area code.
