HP OfficeJet 5510 + OS X 10.5 = Inability to scan

I recently read the archived article http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6244646 from top to bottom.

I have followed the steps provided to replace the HP Printer Drivers with the ones from the Leopard DVD.

The printer works - no doubt about that.

But I'm not interested in the printer. I'm more interested in the Scanner functionality.

So far, no joy. Image Capture doesn't recognize any scanner as being attached. So I'm assuming the 4.0.1 driver supplied with the Leopard install DVD does not support scanning?

I was considering giving the guttenprint driver (if one is available) a shot to see if that helps.

For a little back history - I received this all-in-one unit recently - so I do not have original HP install media and the downloads section from HP seems fairly out of date. So I'm curious as to whether anyone else here has had this issue and has found a way to resolve it (other than ditching the unit and buying a new scanner).

Primary System: 17" PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

You'll need to go to HP's site and download their scanner software, HP Image Zone. Note that the latest version for the OJ5510 dates from 2005 and states that it is compatible with Jaguar. That's three revisions ago. You can try it, but I suspect that you may have problems. Certainly HP has abandoned support for most of its MFDs dating from then, for both Leopard and Vista.

Alternatively, the OJ5500 is on the list of supported scanners for VueScan, my app of choice for supporting scanning on scanners/MFDs abandoned by their vendors. The OJ5510 will probably work. Download VueScan and see, it won't cost you anything but time if it doesn't work.

If that doesn't work you're pretty much gonna have to buy a new MFD. My Brother MFC440CN is supported under Leopard. Some Epson and Canon systems are also supported. Personally, after several bad experiences with HP, culminating in my old HP MFD being abandoned and my being told, in so many words, by HP 'support' that I should buy a new device, I will never buy anything from HP again. (Yes, I did buy a new device. I bought the Brother. I will probably be buying Brother printers and MFDs for some time to come. They work and their support people actually know what they're talking about.)

Here's a HP article about scan functionality with 10.5 > http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01234231&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us &lang=en&os=219&product=311255
HP scan software is to be used for scanning, not Apple supplied software.
Maybe this software update will help > http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-34967-1 &lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=219&product=311255

Should HP support 4 and 5 year old printers to make them work with newer computers?
Most of the newer printers don't last that long, therefore no problem.

From the above HP article:

"Scanning is no longer supported when using Mac OS v10.5 with the following products:
HP PSC 1100 series
HP PSC 1200 series
HP PSC 1310 series
HP PSC 2110 series
HP PSC 2170 series
HP PSC 2200 series
HP PSC 2310 series
HP PSC 2400 series
HP Officejet 4100 series
HP Officejet 4200 series
HP Officejet 5500 series
HP Officejet 6100 series
If the scanning features are necessary, upgrade to an HP product that is fully compatible with Mac OS v10.5."

What a bunch of crooks.

I have been using a C6150 to scan for almost a year and one half. Leopard broke it when it came out, HP finally released the 9.7.1 update in February which returned the ability to scan. Apple showed an "update" in the Software Update (last summer, last fall? I can't remember when that was) which again broke the ability to scan.

I liked what it did for printing, but the scanner is too important to me. So, I uninstalled the update and reinstalled 9.7.1 and the scanner worked again.

Yesterday we got a new MacBook, and after applying all the Software Update updates, I installed the 9.7.1 software and (this turned out to be very important!) skipped the Setup Assistant.

The Scan Pro software said the scanner didn't initialize (I don't recall the exact message as I have a cold ::grin:: ). I manually set up the printer, but the scanner didn't show up. It did work through the browser interface, so it was connecting somehow, just not through the Scan Pro software. I was considering cloning a plain jane install image I keep for emergencies onto the MacBook, but fortunately did some investigating first and found a system that should have been able to scan couldn't. I went back and used the Setup Assistant and the scanner then worked. I was astonished to say the least.

So if you are not able to scan, and HP has a download from after the intro of Leopard, I'd suggest following HP's uninstall steps, then reinstall and use the Setup Assistant. Here is the uninstall info:

Good luck.

PS Did I mention how sweet it is when you have been using a PowerBook 800 DVI and you upgrade to a new MacBook? My wife tells me it is very sweet!
