Opening .rtf file as a Word file

How can I configure Safari to open an downloaded .rtf file as a Word file? For example, with Firefox, it will initially ask what application you wish to use.

No, that shouldn't be necessary. Word can open .rtf files.

This really doesn't involve Safari; it's actually something that you set in the Finder. You just need to set Word as the default application for opening .rtf files.

In the Finder, click on an .rtf file and click Command-I (or click on File in the menubar and choose "Get Info.") In the "Open with" section of the info window, select Word in the dropdown menu. Then click on the "Change All" button to make this the default application to open all .rtf files. Click "Continue" in the confirmation dialog.

Yes, I know that, but I was interpreting the question as he wanted to open an .rtf as a Word file, not with Word. Perhaps he meant it the other way, though.

I see what you mean. 🙂 I'm going by Gary's second sentence, "For example, with Firefox, it will initially ask what application you wish to use." I think the intention is to open the file with Word. But we shall see ...

What I meant was: instead of the .rft file being opened up by TextEdit, I want Word to open the .rft file. The suggestion to use Get Info and change the protocol for opening all .rft files provided the exact fix for my problem. Thanks again.

That's what I thought you meant. Good to hear it worked. 🙂 Thanks for posting back to let us know.
