Well, it's a matter of arithmetic. Drive manufacturers cite their product capacities using a GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. However, computers do arithmetic in binary - powers of 2. Hence, a real GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. If you divide 320,000,000,000 by 1,073,741,824 you will get 298.02 GBs. Deduct a few MBs for the directory and you have a net capacity of 292.77 GBs. So in reality nothing is missing.
