How does one retreive their music if they've lost it on the hard drive?
I bought a new computer, the tech copied my old hard drive onto the new one. I couldn't get iTunes to open, so I downloaded it again. I still can't get the songs I already have to display. Help?

My hard drive crashed and replaced it with a new one. Now that I'm logged in (using my old account) I still can't see my downloads.

I got a message saying "The iTunes music library cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes". And then just the "OK" button to push (so much for the vaunted ease of use of Apple software). Anyway, I went to the Apple site and dowloaded the latest iPod softwared. Restarted the computer and... nothing. Same message. This used to work fine -- some months ago that I used it. Now it doesn't. Grrrr.
Can anyone email me to tell me what to do, as now that I want to get to my iMusic library, I really want to get to it!

I may have a similar problem. I moved my iTunes directory to a different location and now I can't access the library. There is an option under edit/preferences/advanced where you point to the new library, but that didn't work. However! If go directly to the library (using windows explorer) and double click on the file it launches iTunes (assuming the file association is correct) and automatically adds it to the iTunes library! I presume that you have to change the library location first using edit/preferences/advanced. There's probably a correct way to get iTunes to recognize the new library location, but this should get you moving.
I recently transfered my files(itune library) from my old computer to my new computer on external hard drive. songs all were moved. I then ripped new audio cd's on to my new computer. they appeared on itunes. then I snyched my ipod with my itunes. My ipod took all of the new songs. Now my itunes says it can not locate the original files of my old music library. Anybody know how to help
I created a library of both purchased music and music from personal CDs before hooking up my IPod. When I tried to hook up my IPod, the computer said it needed to install the ipod software, from the disk, which I did. The tech at apple told me not to reinstall intunes, and I did not. I then synced my ipod, and not all my music is gone, and it seems as though a new version of itunes (with new download)is on my computer with all the sample, original music the computer came with. Anyone know where my old library went, or how I can retrieve it?
Try a search of the HD. If the files are deleted then ipod says (if you bought them from itunes) you can only download once. Their fix is to repurchase.
If the files are gone from the HD but still on your ipod and you can play them from the ipod you can copy them back. To do this go to ipodsoft.com and dl ipodagent. The software is excellent and intuitive. Follow ipod HD enablement and then follow ipod agent instructions for copying back to HD.

This is how it works on my computer (Windows XP Home):
Regardless of where you put your music files, it looks like iTunes wants the library index files in the my documents\my music\iTunes folder. If the folder does not exits, iTunes creates it automatically. So, if you move your music files, you must leave the library index files where iTunes wants them. Also if you move your music files, you need to update Edit/Preferences/Advanced/iTunes Music folder location with the correct location of your music files (the iTunes Music folder is named iTunes/iTunes Music). If you dont know exactly where iTunes will be looking for the library index files, try searching your computer for the iTunes music folder or perhaps the file iTunes Music Library.xml.

The songs are on your hard drive, yes? Did you import them into iTunes?
Since downloading itunes 4.7.1 everything works fine, except that the playlists/ library starts and stops playing when it feels like. I have contacted apple support but no one will help. They keep telling me to contact gateway.
I have a variation of this problem, any songs that I import from a cd dont show in the library. I've checked that they are in the itunes folder - but they dont show on the library. I've tried different cd's but dont think that's the problem cause the tracks do get placed into the itunes folder. Anyone has any ideas?
I bought a couple songs well won these ones and I accidently purchased one I dont want. so I deleted it because it wasnt the right one. But then I purchesed Push by Stone Temple Pilots and I cant find it in my library or in my purchased music list or anything. So if you could help please e-mail me at streetracingfool2@yahoo.com if you would. Thanks for your time.

I've been out of town for a month and just hooked my ipod to my computer to sync with itunes --when i opened itunes, there were only 85 songs (1kb) instead of the 15 kb of music I had in the itunes library when i left. when i plug my ipod in i get a message that reads: "The ipod...is linked to another itunes music folder. do you want to change the link to this itunes music library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this ipod with those from this library?" which i don't want to do! how can i find my correct itunes library? when i look on my hard drive, all my music is there - but can't seem to figure out how to direct itunes to it. Help! please!
Im new to this whole thing.but i was wondering if you like saved 12 free songs from moutain dew bottles if you could get a cd that was like 10 to 12 dollars rather then get free songs.if you can help please let me know.thanks for your time.
