the conflict apocrypha

b this is a compendium of case studies of (and fixes/workarounds for) "conflicts" between itunes and other software packages (and related problems).

b norton internet security 2005

itunes 4.8 and 4.9 won't launch

It happened to me also, but I have solved it. I have norton internet security, and it seems to be too protective, so before launching itunes I disabled the antivirus protection for a few minutes and itunes launched normally (when it has launched you can turn on again the antivirus for your protection).

b mcAfee

"download itunes" on website displays blank blue box

http://users.adelphia.net/~rkeeler1/iTunesMissingLink.JPG

I had McAfee Privacy Service running which must have been preventing my PC from sharing its Operating System info with Apple's website, and thus returning nothing in the blue field. Once I disable it and reloaded the page it worked fine.

b roxio

blue screen crashes on itunes launch

we decided to delete roxio cd creator as the drivers were not up to date and see what happened. Bingo i`m I-tuned up to the max now.

b kazaa gold premium

itunes won't launch

recently my iTunes program got screwed up after I installed a P2P software program Kazaa Gold Premium. iTunes would not even open. I ditched the Kazaa Gold and installed K-Lite. I ran a spyware detect and found the K-Gold had built-in stuff that was interferring with the iTunes. K-Lite does not. Anyway....I did a clean reinstall of the iTunes 4.9 off the website and everything started working together again

🙂 thank you btabz!

we're probably ready for a FAQ on the NIS 2005 issue, since we've had more than
b ten
confirmed cases of it ... but i'm still vaguely hoping that someone will come along and tell us that there's some settings we can adjust in order to stop the problem happening. (i just don't like telling people to turn their virus protection off ...)

ditto probably with the "no button syndrome" McAfee thing. I don't know enough about McAfee settings to feel confident about telling people how to change them.

The other two ... well, i tend to use a "modified-Berman" principle when it comes to this sort of thing:

once is interesting happenstance, twice is data points, three times is evidence

... and we're still at the "interesting happenstance" stage with them. potentially
b very
useful background information when trying to troubleshoot one of these beasts, but i'm a little uncomfortable about jumping up and down and waving my hands in the air about them (yet).

with any luck, i can find more case studies and start getting (justifiably) more excited about them. if you see anything like this, and you've got the time, would you mind posting a reply and link for me?

love, b

Sure, if I see anything I'll just reply here 🙂

Just so you know, I have an FAQ on the McAfee thing, but if yours come out, then I'll delete mine 🙂

About McAfee, I tried to download that onto my computer as my ISP gave it to me for free, but my computer freaked out and stopped working. If people know how to set that one up you should just be able to deactivate it fairly easily 🙂

See ya,

hi btabz!

Just so you know, I have an FAQ on the McAfee thing, but if yours come out, then I'll delete mine 🙂

please don't delete yours ... being run a bit ragged playing toonz- and CoJeff-lite at the moment ... on top of the "error voyeurism" activities and maintaining the 0x archives, headhunting, QT research ... i'm really glad to find out that you've been taking care of this business.

would you mind posting a link off this thread to your FAQ? i'm a great fan of additional context.

love, b

🙂 ps: indeed, McAfee sounds
b frightening
... but after reading Mike Kelley's stories about what else NIS 2005 can do, I'm also getting increasingly worried about the prospect of my NIS 2004 sub running out ...

Aug 18, 2005 12:35 PM in response to b noir

Okay.

here you go, it's nothing major, but basically what we usually post when it comes up...
btabz, "When I try to download iTunes only a blue box appears!", 04:47pm Aug 17, 2005 CDT

I haven't seen it happen to anyone without one of those service running. If something else with that does come up and you find another solution could you just put a reply there? I'll give it a week before I say the tip's complete 🙂

Thanks a bunch!

About McAfee Privacy Service, it seems to have an unpredictable behaviour, but it's always about to block something: I downloaded fine the 4.9 iTunes Version, and the screen I captured myself WITH the button was accessed with Privacy Service running. What happened however with the 6.? version (from Internet Security 6.0) was a complete blocking of the podcasts and I could access only randomly to iTMS. With the new version of McAffee Privacy service (7.1) I can access and download anything from iTMS, except podcasts from time to time who answer that the server seems not to exist (I don't remember the exact error message point by point, but it's the meaning). If I think to disable it prior to download the podcasts, all happens without any error message or âš  marked file. And these errors are rare, I had none since the last Windows update (doesn't mean it's related, however).
Don't know if it can help to understand what happens, but I noticed that regular "error on page" of iexplorer.exe when I had the 6.? version disappeared. With this version, I had also to disable it to download a ZIP file otherwise it came corrupted to my computer, not yet tried with the 7.1 version.

mother of
b pearl!

I never even knew that forum
b existed
...

i've said it before (to myself ... i know, it's a bad and disturbing habit) in other contexts, it's
b important and sensible
that there's a time constraint on level rises ... there's old stuff that i just can't see on the forums due to the deletion process (so i'm missing relevant working knowledge and experience), and every few weeks i discover a forum-full of goodies purely by accident ...

... anyhoo (says b, regaining some composure), i've got you on my list. and i know that Blandine and Laura Connolly have been keeping an eye on this too, so there's other potential sources of feedback.

Yes, it did, and that was script errors who disappeared when I refreshed the page. Another detail, when it did happen, I indeed was unable to click on any link if I hadn't refreshed, it's like that I learnt quickly the short cut F5 😉
To disable Privacy Service for this IE matter didn't help, and the un installment improved the display, but I did want to remove advertises and I re installed not to see "dates with real women near your town" anymore!
I suspected that it had something to see with the inability to download protected WMA licenses (appeared suddenly out of any update/configuration or so), but having found some Swedish & Finnish pop bands in iTMS, i didn't try to come back to my previous store and kept iTMS as only download source.

Aug 18, 2005 2:17 PM in response to b noir

Oh sorry, I forgot, in the case it can help.

When I tried to understand what it could be, that was just a lot of charabia, but it always said me something like "...ne gère pas cet objet" (something, I don't recall what, "don't manage this object", literally).
I disabled the debug, obviously helpless for me, I however had the feeling that it tried to fix the problem to the web page rather than on the computer. Don't know once more if it's related or give clues to understand the problem, but as I don't reproduce it anyways (good thing for me), I cannot give more informations that what I recall from several months ago.

Aug 18, 2005 3:59 PM in response to StarDeb55

thanks StarDeb! my mind is eased (although still a bit conflicted ...)

actually, that's also a useful observation for the whole NIS 2005 research project. there was one report i saw somewhere that suggested that the
b order
in which you
b installed
NIS 2005 and itunes actually made a difference to whether or not you got symptomless launch failure ...

so we've got a couple of interesting happenstances now.

b quicktime 7

itunes 4.6 and 4.9 suddenly start producing generic MS error messages on launch

So I [...] asked my brother if he had installed anything recently and apparently he installed the new version of Quicktime. I tried to open it but that failed also, so I reinstalled Quicktime. Lo and behold, iTunes works again.

b quicktime 7 and itunes 4.9 conflict report is a false alarm

in the following case:

Alex Cason, "iTunes will not start" #2, 10:48am Aug 19, 2005 CDT

... the problem proved to be a bad installation of QT 7 rather than a conflict. once the installation had been replaced, itunes launched. itunes 4.9 requires a QT installation to run. if the QT is uninstalled (or broken, as in this case), itunes will not run.

error by b noir in initial post, apologies from b noir in this post.

love, b
