Can Not Update Apps Directly on iPhone or Via iTunes

I am having a problem with updating apps installed on my iPhone.

First, when I try to install an update directly on my phone (by downloading/installing from the app store on my iPhone), it begins to download/install, but then gives me an error message, saying that the app could not be installed, but that it will be available through iTunes the next time I plug in my phone. This happens almost every time I try to update any application via my phone. This is incredibly annoying, obviously, but it gets worse, leading me to the second, and perhaps more severe problem.

Any time I download an update via iTunes on my computer and then sync my phone, it says that the app is updating in the progress bar, but when the sync completes it gives me an error message, saying that "Some of the applications in your iTunes library were not installed on the iPhone "Steve's iPhone" because one or more errors occurred. For a list of applications that could not be installed, click below." Clicking below gives me a list of every application that I was trying to update, and next to each one it says it "could not be isntalled because unkown error occurred (0xE800002E)"

The only way to fix this and get the most up-to-date versions of the apps on my phone is to uninstall the program and then reinstall the new version. This is not a good solution, however, because doing that wipes any of the information saved by these apps (including information for games, etc.).

For the record, I am using iTunes 7.7.1.11 and iPhone firmware version 2.0.1. This exact same problem occurred with firmware version 2.0, however.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can give on the situation.

This is not an answer to your problem, but just to say that I feel your pain .....the EXACT same thing has been happening to me. Finally, in supreme frustration, I deleted the apps from my iPhone (which, as you said, deletes all the data), re-downloaded them from the App Store, synced, and I was back in business with the updated versions.....but at the cost of the loss of my saved data. I wish there was some other solution, but I haven't found it!

Well, it is good to hear that the problem isn't just mine, and that tons of other people are having the same issue... anyone who is having this problem, please keep responding with your experience(s). Maybe we can get someone's attention eventually, and Apple will update iTunes, the iPhone firmware, or whatever the culprit is, because, as we have all noted, this is a pretty large problem.

Well I finally got the apps updated. How? I deleted them from the iPhone and then in iTunes the app became unchecked. I checked the app and then it was installed on the iPhone. The only problem was that any data associated with those apps was lost. With the games it was just the high scores, but with apps like Splash ID and Fuel Gauge it was all my passwords and a years worth of fuel fill-up data. I tried a restore of all that data using the backup, but what happened there was that when the iPhone restored the back-up it also restored the out dated app as well. Therefore the only thing I could do is re-enter al the data that was lost all over again. At least with Splash ID that was a sync with the desktop application. With Fuel Gauge it's a matter of going back and re-entering everything again. I hope this doesn't happen everytime I need to update a program.

I really needed to use Todo so I ended up spending a couple of hours to "restore" the phone so I could have the updated version. It worked, and everything is fine now. However, I'm sure the problem isn't resolved . . . meaning, if there's another update for Todo (or ANY app) I'll still be unable to update with out a restore.

I sure hope they resolve this problem, I'm tired of spending my time on this.
