Help! I can't unmute my Macbook Pro

I can know longer unmute my Macbook Pro. Looking at sound settings I see no output devices and the mute button is checked and shaded, not allowing me to uncheck the mute box. Is there a way to reset drivers?

MacBook Pro 17", Mac OS X (10.4.9)
