Have to be an authorized user to buy the new iPhone 3G?

Hello, I'm going to buy the new iPhone 3G tomorrow. I was reading online the requirements and things you must have when you go into the Apple Retail Store to buy the phone. It said you must be the primary AT&T account user.

Somebody else in my family is the owner, and I'm a user. I asked an Apple customer service person, and she said as long as I can be an "Authorized" user, that other family member will not have to be with me when I buy the new phone.

How do I become an AT&T authorized user on my account?

The person who is the primary AT&T account holder must contact AT&T to add your name and any other required information as an authorized user for the account.

Thank you so much. The customer service person gave me a number, but it didn't work. Should I just call a general AT&T Customer Service phone number?

You're welcome.

I would call the general number and eventually you should be directed to the appropriate department for getting this handled.
