Buy iphone w/no contract?

OK I want to get an iPhone 3G but I don't want to have a new contract for 2 years. So the logical choice is to get the $599 8GB iPhone which doesn't require a contract.

My question is that, since I already have an ATT family plan, can I just buy the iPhone for $599 and use it in place of my old Nokia?

Would I have to get a new number for the iPhone, as in get a new account?

I don't really need the data plan as I am almost always within range of wifi and I don't want to pay any activation fees, etc as I already have an ATT account...

If I recall, do a search for the iPhone subsidy whatever the spelling is. They had the $199 $299 deal but if you refuse the 2 year contract I think it's double the iPhone 3G's price.

I think some bragged that they had to pay a termination fee to do the transfer also.

Currently AT&T does not offer any option for those wanting to buy an iPhone with no contract. You must accept a new two year contract in order to get a 3G iPhone.

If you don't take the subsidized price you don't have to sign a contract. But I think all that does it get you out of the 2 years, you still have to sign up for service/data but you can leave at any time.

iPhone requires a 2-year contract.

I paid $399 for the 8 gig and was required to renew my 2 year contract. ATT CS said until they come out with a truly unsubsidized phone, a 2-year contract is required. I.e. even the $399 and $499 phones are subsidized.

That makes no sense. Contract price is 199, ETF is 200, still less the the $599... IF you terminate early, you might actually keep it for 2 years. If so, you saved 400.

Activation for existing ATT customers is $18.

No, you cannot. At this time, the iPhone 3G is sold with a 2 year contract which requires the data plan.
