Keeping my photos on my external hard drive

I am trying to figure out how to keep all the photos I view and edit in iPhoto onto my external hard drive. I found how to import the pictures from my hard drive but I can't seem to keep them there and save them there. Any words of wisdom is appreciated.

IMack, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

To run iPhoto with your iPhoto library on the external drive quit iPhoto, drag your iPhoto library from the pictures folder to the external drive and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library option to point to your external drive copy of the iPhoto Library.

Once you have tested the library on the EHD you can quit iPhoto and drag the one on your internal drive to the trash (do not empty the trash until you test iPhoto one more time)
