Backup on a Quicksilver

Hi,
I'm not familiar with what is needed on a G4 Quicksilver Mac to completely "Clone" the HDD.
I want to put OS 10.4.11 on my G4,but I want to make sure I don't lose anything in the process. I'm not familiar with the back-up process on the Mac.
I have 10.3.9 OS on now. Is there a back-up program on that OS that I can use to clone my system ? I just put a New Pioneer DVD Burner in to use to back-up to a DVD-RW.
What is the procedure to follow to clone a HDD on the Mac ? Thanks.

Hi-

1-Install a second internal hard drive, or, connect an external firewire drive.
2-Format the drive, using Disk Utility. Format to Mac OS Extended-Journaled.
3-Download SuperDuper!.
4-Use SuperDuper! to clone your system drive to the second or external drive.
5-Reboot to the clone to confirm function.

A clone cannot be made to a DVD. A disk image of the system drive can be made with Disk Utility, and then the disk image can be burned to DVD.

Hi-

SuperDuper! is a third party cloning utility. The free version makes complete bootable clones to backup hard drives.

Cloning is the process of creating an exact copy of the system and data, and copies "invisible" files necessary for a system to be bootable. Simple file duplication does not do this.

A Disk Image is a compressed copy of any file placed into the image. This is a good way to create a backup, but does not make a bootable copy of the system, as is.

Though using Disk Utility and Disk Images can create a backup which can be used to restore a system, SuperDuper! is by far the easiest, most assured method of creating a viable, bootable clone.

I use SD!, and wouldn't want to be without. I know many others on the forum feel the same. Excellent utility.

"They carry 80GB Western Digital or Seagate drives."

I suppose there's no problem mixing brand names( buying a Western Digital) and then making the Western Digital "Clone" the Master and the 80gig Seagate the "Slave".
Right ?

"If your QS is not a 2002 model,"

Where can I find out what year my QS is ? I don't see it in "About This Mac " ?

"that is, doesn't support large drives (over 128GB) you can still use a 160GB drive. It will format to 128GB, and the unused portion will cause no harm."

Couldn't I "Partition" the 160gig drive and use the 128gig and the remaining 32gigs seperately, somehow ? Thanks.

Could I ask your opinion :

There are two Seagate 160 gig PATA drives I found; one on the OWC site and the another on the Seagate site.

1.) On OWC:

"160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 7200rpm 8.5ms 8MB Cache Ultra ATA/100 with Quiet Drive Technology. 5yr Seagate Warranty. (SEAST3160815A)" - $56.95

and on the Seagate Sit:

2.)"Internal 3.5 Inch Hard Drives 160GB - Ultra ATA/100

Any difference to influence a selection ? Thanks.

Could I ask your opinion II:

I have 10.3.9 running "Classic Mode" under 9.2.2 so I can open my old Quark 3.3.2
app. with Classic.

I had a lot of trouble getting "Classic" to install under 10.3.9 (after I did a Clean Install I forgot how I had initially did it years ago).I want to prevent that from happening so...BEFORE I install 10.4.11 I want to clone my current System with Classic & Quark all set-up(in case the installation of Leopard MIGHT cause any problems).
My Question(s) is(are):

1.)BEFORE I Clone my Primary Drive to the new drive. Should I install 10.4.11 on the new drive and THEN clone the rest from my primary to the new drive ?
2.) Can I SELECTIVELY clone the rest of my HDD without affecting the newly installed 10.4.11 ? OR, is there just ONE WAY to clone.Meaning the WHOLE Drive or NOT AT ALL? If so, HOW is that done in SuperDuper ? OR
3.)Is it BETTER to just clone my WHOLE HDD to the new drive and THEN install
10.4.11 ?
4.) 10.4.11 is the LAST Mac OS that works with "Classic Mode" is that correct ?
5.) Should the installation of 10.4.11 over 10.3.9 disturb my Classic, Quark set-up ? Thank You.
