Delete button out of control whilst typing..

Same problem for me too...quite annoying as it seems to only do it when I have typed a long message???

Yep, happened to me too...

Mine still does after upgrade. That thing will literally keep going until I hit done or the reset button. Just did while typing this post. 2G did not do this. Would be nice to get some answers or a fix.

I've had exactly the same problem. You delete a few letters or words, then the delete key locks and deletes loads of your text at speed. I've found hitting the 'space' key stops it, but it deletes so quickly you still loose a couple of lines of text before you can stop it, even if you're quick.

I phoned O2 about it and was told that this problem had never been reported before, and that what I was saying couldn't be true because holding down the delete key deletes the whole page of text at once, not letter by letter then word by word. Each time I tried to explain how the delete key actually functions on a 3G iPhone, the lady just repeated "holding down the delete key deletes all the text on screen" like I was a complete moron. She wouldn't listen so I just hung up in the end out of sheer frustration. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Yes, I had the same thing occur yesterday. Original iPhone, v2.0.2 software. I hope someone at Apple is reading this and can figure out a solution. It's very irritating to have to redo the message in its entirety.

There might be other times this happens, but here's how I've been able to consistently recreate the problem. If you drag the cursor to just before an upper case letter, then start typing, and the last thing you type is a punctuation, and then you drag the cursor out to just after the upper case letter, and then hit the back space button, it will go ahead and start deleting everything you've typed so far. It's good to know hitting the space bar stops it. I might take advantage of the bug for deleting entire words when I wish to. For instance, when you allow autocorrect to do it's thing but it suggests wrong words, it woud be nice to quickly delete a lot of entries.

Holding down delete still deletes word by word on my 2G iPhone with v 2.0.2. My guess is that tech was smoking something. If they don't believe you when you call, just ask if they can grab an iPhone and go through the steps to confirm what they're saying, or to at least help set you straight if you're wrong. (Of course, the goal is for them to see that they're being idiots. 🙂 )

This occurs on my iPhone 3G (running 2.0.2). Since I've encountered it in the Notes and Mail apps, this sounds like a bug with the system-wide editor control(s).

I'm glad I found this thread, and the steps here for reproducing this infuriating bug. I'll have to try the spacebar the next time it occurs.

Having updated to iPhone 2.1, I wanted to see if this still occurs. Using JaneiR36's test, it still does, alas. Although hitting the spacebar, when I'm fast enough, does stop the deletion from going completely berserk.

Same problem here. No better after updating last week.
