Configure FTP service on OS X server 10.5.4

I am trying to support a customer who is running Mac OS X server 10.5.4. I do not have this software, only a client version of 10.5.4.

I am looking for instructions to setup the FTP service on server. When we attempt to connect from another PC/Mac *** DOS or terminal, it connects but terminates the connection immediately.

Any information on this setup would be much appreciated, I can't find anything out there.

Intel, Mac OS X (10.5.4), OS X server

Have you actually enabled the FTP file sharing service on the Leopard server? When you say it connects immediately, do you mean you enter a username and password at the ftp prompt, then it terminates your connection? Can you post the output of the connection attempt from another Mac?

Thanks for lending a hand.

I'm actually looking for the steps to enable and setup the FTP service at the server. I'm familiar with this setup from a client perspective.
When we perform the test via DOS, it connects for 1 second and then terminates by host. We don't get a chance to enter credentials. Perhpas it's enabled, but has a low timeout connection?

If you have any screen shots of this configuration, please send them along.

OS X's FTP server has never been worth much, and seeing as how dangerous a protocol FTP is, most admins will tell you to stick to SFTP--which works fine.

If you absolutely must have plain vanilla FTP then I'd suggest looking into third party solutions.

Sounds like the FTP server isn't actually running. Unfortunately, I don't have 10.5 server so don't know how to set it up, but I imagine it's done through the Server Admin. Maybe this site will give you some clues:
