Personally, I don't think you need a protector. Some people, though, are more paranoid that I am.

Is the iPhone 3G screen made of glass? If so, why would you need a screen protector?

Yes, its optical quality glass.

It is glass. Some just fear scratches on the glass though it is really hard glass. Also protectors do provide some help from finger prints/smudges.
I myself have no protector (or even a case) on my phone and my wifes. Both screens are prestine.

Thanks for the info. I thought it was glass but wasn't sure. I think screen protectors are hard to put on and they don't look very good. I'm like you, no protector. Thanks again!
Glass does scratch, Its harder to scratch than plastic but it definitely does scratch. I dont know where people get this idea that glass is unscratchable. Power support's screen protectors are extremely easy to put on by the way, in fact they are the only good screen protectors I have ever tried.
your windscreen wipers on your car can scratch your windscreen, after years and years of use.
Ian it is not the wiper blades themselves that scratch the glass, rather it is the dirt and road grime on the windshield that actually scratch the glass.
I recently bought a crystal film set for my iPhone, I believe it's made by Power Support.
I was of course a little paranoid about scratching my screen so I decided to invest in this. I must admit that in the past, I've had trouble installing these type of films on my screens, but this brand seems to work really well. I don't even notice it on my iphone. Fairly easy to install. I also find it a lot easier to wipe off any fingerprint smudges.
I guess with this crystal film, I have a bit more peace of mind knowing that I at least have another protective layer.
I hope this helps...

I hear ya, I wasn't actually meaning the rubber, but more to say that it's not only diamonds that can scratch glass. That's just a test to see if the diamond is a real diamond or not as a cubic zirconia wouldn't mark it
