Does Battery Drain When In Sleep/Lock Mode?

Last night I left my iPhone "on" (i.e. I did not physically shut it off) and when I checked it this morning the battery was nearly dead. I've followed all the "tips" to improve battery life (dimming, turned off location services, I don't keep it set on 3G, etc) but I'm wondering why the battery drained if it was in sleep mode.

Is there even a sleep mode on the iphone? If so, do I not have mine set? I have it set to "auto lock" after one minute and I though that was the conservation mode.

Maybe I left an application running or something??

Anybody else having this issue? Is it best to actually shut the **** thing off at night?

"Sleep" means on, but idle. You will still receive calls, e-mail and text when the phone is in "sleep" state. Sleep means you are not using it, and the screen is dark. If you want, you can turn it off. Then it will not do any of the things above and phone calls will go directly to voicemail. I would venture to say most folks do not power off their phone at night. But they plug it in to a charger (which turns the phone back on, if it is off).
