HP Photosmart C4380

I received a wireless printer from the Apple store when I bought my MacBook in July. It is the HP C4380. I would like to connect it wirelessly to my computer but not with a wireless router. It says in the instruction book for the printer that you need to create an ad hoc connection, but I am unsure about how to do that. Does anyone know how to do it?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.4), none

basically you need to set the printer up with its own IP address, there are two modes in most wireless printers. One is Ad-Hoc and the other is Infrastructure. i think that you will want to set up your computer in Infrastructure.... where is the link for instructions... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01431804&lc=en&cc=us&rule=1 8681&product=3221646&dlc=en

I am in the same position. I am on a Mac Mini, bought a new 24 inch iMac and one of these printers. The printer arrived first so I tried setting it up over wifi to the Mac Mini. I spent several hours on it and was unable to get it to work. The link that you gave does not explain how to set up the network on the Mac, it assumes you already have a wifi network set up. I tried setting one up using every option I could find but still was not able to get it to work.

It tells me it is all set up but then says "Device Not Reachable" and that my Mac doesn't have access to the network that I created. But the Mac's wifi logo shows that it is connected to the network.

I read many reports from people in the same position - the consensus was that it is not possible unless you have a wireless router.

I am in the same situation. Just moved to a new house, had everything previously working in the old house. I set up my wireless network as usual, MacBook Pro connecting just fine, but the HP setup assistant is becoming a nightmare, after being a pretty easy experience from the first time........

Error message: "Device Not Reachable" as though it thinks my computer doesn't have access to my network... but it has a full signal. I've tried different workarounds for hours. This thing is ridiculous.

I've got the same thing going on with C4380. I also ONLY bought it because it was wireless. I have a Windows Vista desktop machine and a MB. I have to admit that the printer works great with the Vista machine (either wirelessly or USB), but I haven't been able to get my MB to even see it in the wireless mode.

When I first got the printer, after failing to get it to connect, I spent about an hour on the phone with HP tech support before giving up. The first thing the tech pointed out was that the CD/DVD? that came with the printer did NOT support Leopard. If you look at the disk (at least on mine), it clearly says it supports Windows and MAC 10.4.x. So the tech had me delete all references to the printer on my MB. I then downloaded installation software from HP that did support Leopard.

However, after installing the latest version, it still did not connect in the wireless mode with my MB (works fine with a USB hookup). I MAY try the installation instructions in the posting above.

I may have some security issue that is preventing the MB from connecting with the C4380 as I also can't see my Vista computer from my MB.

Well, I am on Tiger and I can't get it to work either. But I really am not sure if it's the printer or if it is my inability to set up the wifi network in the required way as there are no instructions relating to this in any of the supporting documentation. All the Apple support info I have read about Airport infers that a base station is necessary.

I thought all this Apple stuff was supposed to be simple.
