I'm on the latest version of software, the phone is a G3 and I used to have to have the orginal iphone.
My problem is that when I reply to an email I receive a message stating recipient addresses was invalid. This happens on most reply's. Invalid??? The person sent me mail in the first place??????
Alot of ISP's will only let you send mail if you are connected to their network, this is to reduce or stop them being used to send spam mail.
The problem with the iPhone is it can use WiFi at home but it can also use your phone providers network as well which leads to this problem. If your ISP will only let you send mail when connected to them (e.g. via wireless at home) you will need to find another email provider to send your mail through (e.g. HotMail or Google Mail)
I have a similar problem - except my service provider confirmed that i'm using the correct pop & smtp settings. I've noticed though that the problem is limited to the 3G network only - when i'm on wi-fi the invalid emails suddenly become valid again, which has me thinking it's a carrier issue.
The same thing happens to me; i reply to an email and i get the message "cannot send mail, invalid email address". It happens whether I'm using the 3G network or WiFi. After this happens it usually gets stuck "checking for mail". At that point I have to reboot.
I think I want my old Motorola phone back. The iPhone has been nothing but frustrating to say the least!
i got the same error using gmail. it turned out to be the 3G network. once i read the post above i switched over to the Edge network and voila...my outbox purged my "invalid emails." go figure. btw, i've never had this problem and i've been using the phone for 4 months now.
Could you give the exact wording of the error message you receive? The error I am familiar with is:
"Cannot send mail. One of the recipient addresses was invalid."
I've seen this issue occur in two different instances. The most common is due to security settings on outgoing server you're using; it requires you send over a particular network to access their server, and sending over anyone else's network besides theirs results in this error. So, it's a provision your email provider has made.
The other time I've noticed this (of which I have experienced personally) is due to allowing the iPhone's autofill to complete the email address you're typing. Usually another error precedes the error message above, stating: "Invalid Address. 'xxxx@me.com' does not appear to be a valid email address. Do you want to send it anyway?". If this is the case, ignoring the autofill and completing the entire email address manually should work around this issue. For replies, you would have to try erasing the email address in the address field and re-enter it manually I'd imagine.
This began on my iphone yesterday. THe reason of it being a 3G problem is not right. I do not live in a 3G network and it started doing this yesterday. ( I have had this phone for 2 months with no problems till now) It only happens on replies though. I have rebooted, synced, etc. and nothing will work.
What needs to be done (Please note I am using Sympatico as service provider)...
a) Go to setting and in e-mails settings, under your account, disactivate your primary SMTP server...and in second service provider, activate your Rogers SMTP server...
b) Flush out all e-mails you may have tried to send before...
