Choppy Youtube and flash video

I've been plagued by choppy flash video playback on my MacPro in all Mac browsers (Firefox 3, Safari). I have the latest released Flashplayer v 9, and its a MacPro, so its not underpowered.

Youtube videos but other flash videos consistently hiccup, a few frames freeze but the audio goes on. It makes watching action, sports or music videos unbearable.

I can rule out the cable provider, the router, the network or the specs of the MacPro with one solid piece of evidence: on my MacPro with the stuttering youtube video, playing the same video in a Parallels Windows XP virtual machine using Firefox 3 or IE is smooth and free of hiccups.

Clearly if an emulated/virtual machine can play smoothly, then the problem MUST be in a configuration within the host Mac Pro!

I've uninstalled flip4mac and Perian. Any other suggestions?

System: MacPro, 5 G RAM, 2x2.66 Xenons, Leopard 10.5.3, highspeed cable connection (speedtest.net 5815 kb/s download, 984 kb/s upload).

MacPro, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

This issue is well-known to Adobe, but apparently their focus is on mobile phones right now.

There is a discussion regarding this on the Adobe Bugs site, where you can vote in support of resolving this issue. Please take the time to go there ( http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-890 ) and vote! There is only one page of discussion so far and 43 votes, making this issue number 38, with a *_priority level of 'None'_* in the list of issues users want resolved.

Please vote, and encourage your friends and colleagues to vote, to make this issue a priority.

I've got the exact same problem. on Collegehumor.com in particular, the Flash Player 'app/safari extension' Maxes out the processor, sometimes upwards of 140% (Dual Core) and the video goes to crap. It can be fully loaded, it can be full screen or in the window. Absolute rubbish. Unwatchable. And, since I've got the computer hooked up to my HDTV, it's my only means of watching TV since I don't pay for Cable channels, just the internet access.

***?

And is it just me or has Safari been Hanging a lot lately? I've got a pic on my Flickr page that shows one session where it hung 16 times. For upwards of 2-5 minutes at a time. Frustrating to no end. www.flickr.com/kuhnaydeein

I'm really glad to find this thread, if anything, because I thought I was alone on this issue.

I've got a 2nd generation macbook, running 10.5.8, and since going to Leopard, I've had nothing but these same issues. Watching flash video on fullscreen (primarily) on NBC.com, fox.com, hulu, netflix, youtube, and any other video site, causes a stuttering in the sound, usually so bad that I get a greyscreen of death eventually, and I have to reboot my machine. I have many error logs that I've gotten with reference to this. I have uninstalled and reinstalled flash 10. I've cleared caches, and tried safari, firefox, seamonkey, camino, and opera. No matter what, watching video is almost impossible for me if it's streaming via the web. I've been to the apple store multiple times, and I get the boot all the time. More recently I even did a full clean reinstall of OS X, to no avail (at the suggestion of the Genius Bar). I still have the same issue, and I haven't been able to figure out if it's hardware or software based. I have guessed hardware for a long time due to my having sound card issues with this machine in the past, but I am starting to realize that yes, it is flash based - but all the same, I didn't have this issue before Leopard.

So, is there anything, anything at all, to be done about this, save for voting on a bug on Adobe's bug system? Having worked with developers, I know that won't get us anything. I personally believe that I deserve a little more care for this, being that I've paid my $300 for an applecare extension.

I suppose I'm not offering a lot here, but I just wanted to chime in that yes, it is a HUGE issue that deserves attention; web video is a super-basic fuction of the web that a computer should be able to do; the fact that both Adobe and Apple ignore this issue is absolutely atrocious.

I've been often perplexed by the poor performance of Flash video and games, especially on Facebook and YouTube. I've updated all of my software; browser, flash plugin, OS, I have a decent computer and there is no reason for there to be a problem.

In the news on the internet there have been indications of a spat between Apple and Adobe on this matter and that, too, has been very perplexing. Adobe has not seemed to do much to optimize there software and Apple seems to be ignoring the issue. They seem to both be stonewalling and we as customers end up on the losing end, caught in some sort of political fight. Very annoying. I've researched this and it has been YEARS this has been going on. It needs to be fixed for the sake of your customers. Thank you.

I was experiencing extremely choppy flash based videos on Youtube (to the point that I wanted to take my mbp and slam it on a brick wall). I enabled the 9600M GT and that did not change anything.

I just installed the latest pre-release version of Flash from Adobe (version 10.1.51.45 from http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html) and it does seem to have made an effect. It didn't resolve absolutely all of the choppiness and I'm still running on the 9600M GT instead of the 9400M. However, instead of a continuous stream of choppy video (say 30-40 secs into a youtube video) I now see a very small amount of spaced-out skipped frames multiple times within a single video.

Let's see how this spans out.

After months and months (almost a year actually) of having the same problem as everyone else on this thread....I think I figured it out, and it's simple. Take a look at your primary hard drive where all you Applications are installed and see what the size of it is (right click-get info). I freed up half my drive, basically deleting/moving files to Secondary hard drive and Vimeo, Youtube etc all work perfectly again.

Many have suggested that some choppy playback issues (for in-browser playback) are related to the Adobe Flash plugin.

Adobe has released a new version of the Flash plugin this week, which may perform better (although I can't confirm that the problem has gone away completely).

Here are some steps to follow to cleanly update your Flash:

1) Download the Flash plugin un-installer from Abobe, available at: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

2) Close all browsers on your machine and run the Abobe Flash plugin un-installer you downloaded for your platform.

3) Open your browser and reinstall the Adobe Flash plugin (v.10.0.42.34 or greater), available from Adobe at: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

4) After the installation, close and re-open your browser, then try playing back some Flash video at YouTube or wherever...

Hopefully this works. Good luck.

It seems that the problem is only getting worse...

I was about to recommend, whilst using Safari (Version 4.0.4 (6531.21.10)), to go to the official youtube channel,ie. the killers, first two videos watched...I thought the problem is gone, even watching it in HQ format!!! But alas, the next video proved that the problem still persists.

I surely hope Youtube and Apple sorts out a fix for this asap, 'cause this is making me reconsider buying apple TV, or even considering an iPhone, as I was born without patience, and this is quite a test thereof!

ppl, try to repair permission using disk utility, the restart and see if that helped. if does't u have to uninstall the flash player , reboot, reinstall it and repair permissions. i read somewhere when i bought my imac 27" that had the same problem, that sometimes flash installs in a corrupted way and using permissions repair fixes it. it worked for me with all my computers.
