IPOD Classic immediately and automatically disconnects !!

OK this has to be some crap on Apples side, doesn't it? This unit was working fine just 2 days ago and I have done nothing to this computer or the IPOD.I plug it in and it automatically ejects it. I can not access my IPOD classic with my mac nor can I charge it. Way screwed up man. It was asking me to update it for some time now but I did not because others in this forum were having problems with the update and many said to avoid it. I have done nothing since the last time I used it. What on earth could cause this and how can I get my IPOD back W/O having to reset and lose everything.

MacPro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Thanks Victor. I still can not stay connected. It just kicks me out. I can at least charge it when its in disk mode, but thats it.

Anyone else having this issue and/or know why this is happening? I have a bunch of my own music on there that would take me days to find again. I just didn't sync it lately. I never thought it would just decide to stop working.

Have you tried connecting iPod to a different computer? Have you also tried deleting iTunes' and iPod's preference files?
These are located: user>library>preferences
The files are: com.apple.ipod.plist com.apple.itunes.plist

By the way, this would not lose any data, but you will have to set up your preferences again.

Thanks for your help Victor. I take it no one else is suffering from this crazy glitch? I tried it on my Macpro which is not what the ipod is synced too. It is synced to my mini and that is where it won't work. Trashing the prefs does nothing. In fact I don't have itunes set up to automatically load when an ipod is connected, yet it will still eject my ipod. The ONLY thing I did was go over to a friends house to play him a mix of my own creation, which we did through his old g4 running 10.5 through usb 1. I get home and I can't use my ipod. It is that simple. It worked right before and not after.

Sorry, forgot to mention that it does in fact work on my intel mac ... ??? ummm ?? I should also mention that my intel mac is where I created & copied the MP3's which were created in logic and moved to my ipod using itunes. It is not connected to the internet so maybe the version is different. Could this somehow be the culprit?

Since it is not synced to my intel mac I can not retrieve my files.

OK - I so I reset the ipod and this time it worked. i thought there was some sort of hard reset where you lost everything. Apparently it is what I have been doing all along. Holding the menu and middle button down until the apple logo appears. I'm not sure why, and I don't really care but it is working now and I did not lose anything.
Thanks for all the input guys.
I'm good to go
