Kernel panic - usb-related?

My iMac has been acting up the past few months - tried any number of fixes short of wiping the HD and reinstalling from scratch. Here's the log:

Most of those things I had done:
- hardware test: no problems
- I have 512 MB RAM (original with my iMac) but don't run any memory hogs
- repaired disk and permissions
- zapped pram
- it's not software-related (somtimes happens when no apps are running)
- not related to a user account (3 accounts on this mac, happens to any of them, unrelated to whether more than one logged in)
- have not installed any 3rd party hardware (configuration the same now as when I got it from Apple)
- removed all peripherals (I only have 2: HP Deskjet 3900 and Apple iSight camera)
- have done an archive and install from original system disk

Since reading Dr. Smoke I have also ruled out Startup items - there was only one in the the folder mentioned: HP IO, which I removed.

Still the thing keeps panicing, sometimes not for a couple of days, somtimes 6-8 times in a single day.

The one thing I have not done is "Erase and Install" - mainly due to the fact I do not have a FW disk to back up to.

Aug 25, 2008 11:22 PM in response to MGW

I may have a solution which has nothing to do with any of the above...

The past couple of days the panics have been getting more frequent, and finally last night the keyboard and mouse stopped working. I plugged the keyboard in to a different USB port, and since then there have been no panics. Granted it's only been 12 hours, but that's progress! I will monitor and post back one way or another.

no such luck - nearly 24 hrs without a panic, but then it happened again. Will do the erase and install this weekend

Thanks - never heard of rember before, but downloaded and ran it. My RAM seems to be ok.

I also began to suspect the keyboard after this last instance and will try to get my hands on another. This is Norway and nothing is cheap! I've already connected a different mouse in case it's that.

I'm assuming with the line "com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(2.8.1)@0x463000" in the log it's got something to do with my USB-ports or what's connected to them.

Aug 31, 2008 8:35 AM in response to Fredrik Graver

Early indications are inconclusive. Did an erase and install, then transferred my user profiles over from the back I made with SuperDuper (tks. Miriam). Ran the combo updater from apple to bring it back to 10.4.11. The seemed to be ok, but then it would not wake from sleep. Whenever it goes to sleep, it turns itself off whenever I press a keyboard key or mouse button (both have been changed from the ones I was using before).

Ran an upgrade - archive and install - to Leopard, which I also updated with the 10.5.4 combo updater from Apple. Same thing - turns itself off whenever it goes to sleep. No report of a kernel panic when I turn it on, though...

Just finished all the updates a few hours ago, so too soon to tell if then original kernel panic problem has been solved.

I'm not techie enough to make sense of this, but here is the log from when I tried to wake it:
