iSight stopped working

I plugged in my iSight in to my mac for the first time in ages.

OSX ( Tiger ) updated the iSight software - to 1.0.4 ( I could swear it was 1.0.4,but i can only find installation packages for 1.0.3)? The isight was working fine, until today.

OSX cannot find the isight - no video under iChat, doesn't work on my other Mac , neither under XP ( which it did in the past).

I tried reapplying the latest firmware but because the iSight isn't found, it can't be applied.

When I initially plug in the iSight the green light comes on.. and then promptly disappears again upon the iSight trying to focus ( i can hear the noise of it focusing)

Any help would be suggestions would be appreciated, thanks,
Stewart

Hello Stewart,

I can find no 1.0.4 updater for iSight.

The Sight 1.0.3 Updater is for Mac OS X v10.3.7-10.3.9.

The 1.0.3 update is not needed even if you never installed 1.0.3 because your Tiger DVD installed all needed updates when you did your Tiger install. You will be notified of any future iSight updates needed by Tiger via
b Software Update....

When I plug my iSight in, its green light comes on and then disappears just like your does,. This is normal behavior.

Here are my best suggestions.

Check your iSight using the hints in the How To Ensure Your iSight Is Functional FAQ.

If your iSight is not working, see the Where to Find Help for iSight? FAQ for suggestions.

Your info shows Mac OS X 10.4. You should update to 10.4.2. If you have already done so, did you repair permissions afterward?

Perhaps you may have a bad update or a bad download of the update file? You may need to reapply the 10.4.2 upgrade. If so, consider Defcom's suggestion in How did you update to 10.4.2.

You can download the 58 MB Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo and follow the instructions in About the Mac OS X 10.4.2 Update (Combo). I suggest you repair permissions
b before AND after
installing or reinstalling the update.

For detailed on the update process, you may be interested in How I Update My Mac OS X.

Hi

The iSight isn't recognised on any Mac - not even in System Profiler.

Also, the iSight was definitely upgraded - I watched it - it didn't say the upgrade wasn't necessary.

When I opened iChat, this was the point when the iSight was upgraded - to 1.0.3 - I have the installer on my hard disc and which was definitely used.

thanks for the links - i already have installed 10.4.2, and repair permissions etc.

Since the iSight doesn't work on any other machine ( including XP - which previously it DID ), things aren't looking good for it.

Hello Stewart Hector1,
Just for the sake of eliminating one potential conflict, if you have any other firewire devices connected, remove them physically and try the iSight again. Would be curious to know what other Mac's you tried the iSight with.
If this isn't an issue, then I agree w/you, that things aren't looking good for it.
Respectfully,
Bill Gallagher

Hi

I tried removing all other firewire devices - 2 hard discs. When the two hard discs are connected, OSX is reduced to a spinning beachball upon connecting the iSight! ( which never happened before). Disconnecting the iSight and things are once again fine.

The other mac i tried is a G3 iBook - with no other firewire devices.

Thanks for your help,
Stewart

Hello Steve,

... I tried exact the same process as adviced in this post but my isight is still not functioning. Any more suggestion pls ...

Because you have tried everything else, the only thing left is to see your Apple VAR or Service Technician to have your iSight checked. It may be damaged.

If you do not have local access to qualified Apple Service Technicians, see the iSight Service info links in the Where to Find Help for iSight? FAQ for info on how to get it serviced directly by Apple,
