external display Samsung syncmaster T240 and MBP

I have a 2006 MBP 17" with a ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card (VRAM 256 MB).
I would like to get the Samsung syncmaster T240 which has a resolution of 1920 * 1200 and DVI-D connection.
Is it possible to use this monitor at full resolution with the kind of graphics card installed in my MBP without having to worry about compatibility (slower system, distortion in images....)
So far I never used an external display with my MBP....is everything working fine when you connect via DVD-D? I want to use the syncmaster as the only screen, so with the MBP closed.
Thank you very much for feedback!

I also have the T240. I had to use SwitchResX to have a resolution of 1920 x 1200.
And it works with DVI in my case.

For info, I created a Custom Resolution of 1920 x 1200, 60Hz (with use of simplified settings of CVT-RB) in SwitchResX.

Now, is there any plan from Apple or Samsung to have native support of this monitor and resolution 1920 x 1200, 60Hz ?

Thanks
