can my iMac be set to type with French characters?
Hello all! Can my iMac be set to type with French characters? If so, what is the path? And, is there a keyboard overlay to see where the French language characters are located on the keyboard? Thanks!
That was the path... but... is there a way to merge all the french characters? For some reason the numbers/symbols and letters & accents are NOT under one keyboard layout... strange...
As Dave says, go to System Preferences>International then Input Menu.
You can put a check next top Keyboard Viewer. If you have a flag in your Menu Bar then you can select Show Keyboard Viewer & you will get a keyboard layout showing, key symbols will change as you press the Option or Shift keys etc. I presume you know these shortcuts:
Opt/Alt + e then e = é
Opt/Alt = ` then e = è (unless your ` is on the key next to 1 & doesn't need Opt/Alt, this applies to my Logitech keyboard))
Opt/Alt + c = ç
Opt/Alt + e then a = á etc
Hey Steve, np... Your more detailed info helped best... But you know what?
I think our keyboards may be configured a bit differently... no matter how I try a few of your suggestions, they just don't work... given the exact path... OR- - -> it's ME!
Seems to vary I fear... Yes, for the most part... problem solved... I do have to say... Microsoft Word, on a PC has the better foreign language keyboard layout system... and it's MUCH easier...
But... don't get me wrong... this is just an empiric observation here... NOT whining about my beautiful iMac. LOL
Can't
ever go back to a PC... just like they say... 🙂
Hey Steve,
Thanks again for the thoughts... Unfortunately, the only characters that I can use keyboard shortcuts for French are the é, ç and the á (it's better than nothing).
Outside of that, I have to switch keyboard layouts. I know of the accent grave ( `e ) that's nextdoor to the number one key... But it don't work... my translator thinks it's a typo... because it takes up a whole characters worth of space instead of sharing the space with the actual letter (vowel), like the other accents.
So I need keyboard shortcuts for:
ê Ê Ë ë è È
Ô ô Ö ö
à À Û û
I use these letters just enough to make switching keyboards back and forth a little irksome. Since the two keyboards have pretty distinctively different layouts and then we have the position of the A and M keys and.. well... see where this could lead??? LOL
Umlaut = Option + u then letter e.g. ü
Hat = Option + i then letter e.g. ô
Like I said in my first post, because my `is next to the 1 I don't need Option key, I just type `then e & I get è. My `is on the bottom-left of that key, along with ¬ & |
Do you have a flag in the Menu Bar? If so, click on it & select Show Keyboard Viewer. When you press the Option key, or Shift, keys will change in the window to show symbols.
Hey Steve, I have a US flag in my menu bar and clicked. No keyboard viewer... Have something named the character palette, a french flag, a french numerical flag, show input name source and open international...
So is there something I can click on in International Settings somewhere else to open this keyboard viewer??? Sounds like something I could get accustomed to quickly...
Click on Open International then on Input Menu, put a tick in the box next to Keyboard Viewer. Show Keyboard Viewer should then be available when you click the flag.
