Canon mf6550 printer and scanner driver inquiry

Hello, I have a chance to buy a canon mf6550 all in one, and since it has
an automatic duplex copy feature it is just what i need for my music publishing
business. I have read that they did not ever make a scanner driver, and i cannot
find it on there site...is there a chance someone has found a compatible driver that might allow one to scan and print using all of the usual functions?

If anyone has encountered this problem before, I would love the insight.

Thanks a lot!

Hello Tim,

The MF6550 is the consumer version of the iR1022 series, which is regarded as a business version MFD. The 6550 doesn't have scanner support, so no alternate driver/software can be used. While the iR1022 series does support scanning via USB to Windows, I am not sure if any support exists for OS X.

I would recommend you look at the MF4680. This model has push sending, meaning that you can scan via the network to a shared folder on the Mac, it has duplex printing and is cheaper than the 6550.

I cannot remember the network interface specs for the MF4270, but if it is connected to your wireless network via Ethernet rather than USB, then you will be able push scan to a Mac OS X share via SMB.

I believe that pull scanning is only available via USB connection, so it won't be an option on your network.

I just wondered, given you mentioned the MF4680, whether you knew how to scan via the ethernet/WAN port of a Time Capsule? Is this even possible? I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.5.

I didn't find the printer as intuitive as I had hoped to setup. I actually downloaded and installed the drivers from Canon's website. Enabled printing over the ethernet port in Airport Utility (with global advertising) and then had to add the printer using "Canon IP (UFR II)" and manually entering in the printer's IP address which I had to find by navigating the printer's menus (I let it choose its own address automatically). It prints perfectly and will fax and copy as a standalone machine.

I purchased the MF4680 for its network capability and the fact that it claims it can scan to USB thumb drive. I can't get the scanning function to work for this either!

Thanks in advance...

I have Canon MF 4370dn connected via ethernet and I can't get it to print from my iMac. I have tried to install the newest UFR II v1.8 from Canon website. I have tried NetSpot Device Installer. I tried to add the printer through Canon IP UFR II and through IP. Nothing worked.

Printing status showed my document printing and then it stopped. The printer did nothing - it was still in sleep mode.

I also tried to instal Fax driver - no change.

If any one of you have an idea what else I can try, reply here please.

For any Ethernet connected MF series, you will have to add the printer via More Printers > Canon IP (UFRII). You cannot use any of the other protocols included with OS X.

After selecting Canon IP (UFRII), enter the IP address of the MF and enter a queue name of LP. Click Add to complete.

Now, if the printer model you are adding is supported by the driver, then the correct model name or series should be displayed for the printer. I say this because Canon doesn't release Mac drivers for every new model, they only release their drivers at certain times. So, if you happen to purchase a machine that is released between the Mac driver releases, you can have a machine without a supporting driver (note the Windows owners don't get the same 'treatment').

Therefore, open System Prefs > Print & Fax, select the MF in the Printers list and look at the right pane. Next to the entry "Kind:" you should see 'MF4300 Series UFRII LT'. Do you have this or something else?
