How do I scan from a Canon MP610 and capture image?

Hi, I'm new to Mac.

I have a Canon MP610 all in one copier/printer/scanner but my attempts to import scanned pictures in are proving futile.

What I have done so far is to open "image capture" - the photo to be copied appears in the image window - but the scan button won't highlight. The alternative approach has been to select the scan option on the Canon - but nothing happens!

Anyone with any ideas?

Many thanks

Hi dagevick1 -

I have the Canon MP610 which is working for me so I'll help you as best I can. I haven't used the Image Capture software you mentioned as I scan directly through a driver in PhotoShop. This works fine for me. The first thing I'd suggest is checking you have the latest versions of the Canon software. Presuming you're based in the US, try Canon's site [here|http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid =116&modelid=15604#DownloadDetailAct], then choose Mac OS X from the drop down menu. You'll see some have been updated this summer already. I'd check these first before you try anything else then post back.

I had this same problem too. It took me a while to figure it out - not to mention surfing the web for a bunch of sites all with people writing about the same problem. I downloaded the latest driver, checked all the cables, hit every support website I could find, etc. Nothing worked. Then I did +one little thing+ and it worked. I'm assuming that you figured out the problem by now, it's kind of silly.

When you open *Image Capture* [and the name of the software is the big hint] it projects an image from the scanner onto your screen. But YOU still have to go to the image and select what you want to scan. When you place your cursor on the image and then click and drag, you're capturing the area that you want scanned. When you do this you will see all the dimensions of the scan area captured in the Scan Setup box to the right of the image. You can manually go in and change the dimensions to match the material your scanning (8x10, 4x6, 8.5x11, etc) as well as adjust the resolution or increase or decrease the size.

Once you get it figured out it works pretty slick. Unfortunately the directions aren't very obvious and the interface on the printer is a bit misleading. Hope this works for you (and anyone else who suffered this issue).

Yeah i just spent about 2 hours figuring out how to do this also.

1. Scanning doesn't seem to work over WIFI. Plug the MP610 directly into your Mac via USB. (This took me a while to figure out... don't really understand why printing works over WIFI but not scanning but there you go...)

2. Image capture software works fine - just open it up when the printer is connected (or it may open by itself). Per the point above - you need to physically select (with your mouse) the area of the image that you wish to scan - this will "enable" the Scan button.

3. Ignore the scan controls on the printer itself - they do not appear to be relevant to scanning to a connected Mac. The scan is initiated from the software on your Mac.

4. The other software recommended above may have a few more features than image capture, but until you pay for it, it stamps $ signs all over your image which makes them somewhat unuseable...

Good luck.
