Iphone 3G prefers Edge over wifi

Any help appreciated....

I have set my iphone up to connect to the wifi network. It works fine if there is no cellular (Edge) signal. As soon as it finds an edge signal, it defaults to that even when I'm sitting right next to the wifi access point.

It isn't a problem with the network (I don't think) as the iphone works fine on Wifi if you remove the SIM card so it can't get the edge signal.

Obviously I want it to default to a wifi signal wherever it can, but it seems to prefer edge!

Thanks

Andrew

I know it's using Edge as the "E" symbol appears at the top of the screen and things are much slower. Oddly enough, if I go into the settings, it shows that I'm connected to Wifi, but it doesn't seem to be using it.

It works on wifi fine without the sim card, but the moment the sim card is reinserted and it finds an Edge signal, it defaults back to that. I was hoping that today's 2.02 would solve the issue, but apparently not...

I'm showing a WI-FI address under 'General' & 'About', but when I go to 'Settings', 'Wi-Fi' and then the arrow next to my network, everything is empty...DHCP is highlighted, no IP address, subnet mask, router, DNS...nothing. I am using the correct password to get into my network but it keeps telling me 'unable to join'. I didn't have this problem with my first iPhone...is there something I'm doing wrong?? I tried the reset network in the post below...
HELP!

Yeah! WTS! Mine does this, too, it's severely annoying. I would like to use things like Remote, but if it prefers 3G or Edge to WiFi then how am I supposed to do that??

I mean, I have full bars of WiFi signal when I look in Settings -> WiFi, while i have 0-1 bar of ATT service, and yet the phone prefers the Edge or 3G. :P Sometimes I think it's even preferring Edge to 3G! :P I am not impressed.

I am thinking that perhaps you have mac address filter or something of the like going on with your router. If you are certain that you are using the correct credentials, and yet you are getting a modal dialog stating "Unable to join" then your problem isn't related to the problem that everyone else in this thread is having. It would appear that your problem lies in your routers config somewhere.

I have to say, after I switched my router from the one O2 Broadband gave me (O2 UK), to my old 3Com router, my iPhone has started to pick up the WiFi with no problem.

But I'm not convinced that switching routers is the correct solution for everybody. It's definitely an iPhone fault too. I have all my hope on Steve Jobs making the world right again with iPhone 2.1

I too experience problem. 1st generation iPhone. At the local YMCA wifi signal shows in settings as strong signal, but when I go to use internet the "E" shows on home screen as the path being used as access. No problem at home with wifi.

I have reset network and the other suggested fixes but YMCA network still a "No-Go". Didn't have this problem before the last firmware upgrade. I hope this Friday's (9/12) upgrade addresses this issue.
