Downloading songs from iTunes to Rio MP3.

I have an old Rio Sport that I'm giving to my grandson for his use. Does anyone know how to download songs from iTunes. I ripped a CD to my iTunes Library and then tried to drag it to the Rio. The plus sign did not light up showing that it was copying the songs. HELP!!

I went to Preferences -- Importing, and it said he was importing using: AAC Encoder. The dropdown menu had a listing for MP3 players. If I switched to the MP3 encoder do you think that would work and when I'm done, change it back?

The Rio (if I remember mine, from back in the day) only supported MP3, and possibly WAV. But the amount of built in flash memory was rather limited then that you could only fit about 10-12 files (at 128 kbps) on a 64 MB Rio.

However, I do believe that iTunes support for Rio players stopped somewhere around version 3 or 4, around the time that the iPod was introduced. If that is definitely the case, you would need to find an alternate method to get the song files onto the device.

Wish I could help more... I haven't tested mine out in about five years now... 😟

Another thought....

If you're not able to drag the songs to the Rio from the iTunes Library, you can always access the files via Finder to drag them to the Rio.

By default the files are located in ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Arist Name/Album Name/Song Name.

You can also select a file in iTunes, and then click your File menu and choose "Show in Finder" to get you directly to that file's location on your hard drive.

Steve & CG,

You have both been so helpful. I’ve tried everything you suggested and no luck. I believe it’s what Steve said, iTunes just doesn’t support the old Rio MP3’s and why would they. As I mentioned, the only reason I was trying this was so my 9-year-old grandson would have something to carry in his new backpack that had a place for an iPod and a hole for the earphone cord.

Thanks again.

Dragging and dropping files onto my Rio Forge, in Finder, yields the error, "The item <filename> cannot be copied because there is not enough free space." However, both Finder and my Rio Forge say that the Forge is empty.

I know there's some sort of connection, though, because I was able to use Finder to delete the stuff that used to be on my Forge.

Finder says I have Read & Write permissions to the Forge. Is there some trick to enabling the Mac to write to a Rio Forge?
