Canon Selphy CP720 Network Problems

I just dowloaded the new CP720 driver for Leopard from Canon. When I tried to add the printer via bonjour (it is connected to my PC), I can select the printer but the driver doesn't come up.. it asks me to select from the list (it is not in the list)... or choose "other". In the other menu, I go to \library\printers\selphycp but none of the items in any of the directories seem to be what i need. If I connect directly, it finds the printer and driver with no problem. Has anyone gotten this to work? I cant even tell what the driver file should look like, though most are grey in the list anyway.

Any help would be appreciated. I thought of connecting to my time capsule but i don't want to waste my time just to have the same thing happen.

What you have experienced is the norm for most Canon consumer printers. The drivers do not work across mixed networks, such as when they are shared from Windows computers.

So if you want to continue connecting via the Windows share, you will need to install the Gutenprint drivers available from Sourceforge ( http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/index.php3). Version 5.1.7 has the CP720 as a supported printer, and I assume that later versions would also support it.

With this driver set installed, when you browse with the Print Using menu, you will see the 'Canon SELPHY CP720 - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.x'. Select this and you should be able to print.

Note that the Gutenprint driver may not give you as many features as the Canon driver. So if you want to use the Canon driver, it should work if the printer is shared from the Time Capsule.

Thanks for the tip! I had looked at these drivers a while back but they only listed printers up to the 710. In fact, the only place where I could find in even the 5.2 Beta (which I just installed) that the 720 is supported during the actual installation when you open the list of supported printers! The website should really update the list to be more complete!

I just printed a picture from my macbook to the 720 on the PC and it worked! I may eventually switch to the Canon driver if I decide to hook it up to the Time Capsule, but that will only be after we move and depends on location. This is great! It is the first time I have printed from iPhoto other than to the mail order iPhoto service!

Hello Mr Kay,

From reading your posting I am not sure of your setup. If you have the Selphy connected via USB to the Windows computer, and wanted to connect to this share from your Mac, then you would need to use a Gutenprint driver rather than the Canon driver. Looking at the supported printer list for v5.2.0rc1, the ES20 is listed as a supported model, so you will need this version if the above is your setup.

Once the driver is installed on the Mac, you can open System Preferences > Print & Fax and select to Add ➕ a printer queue. Select Windows and browse for the share on the PC. After selecting the share name, then open the Print Using menu and browse for the 'Canon Selphy ES20 - Gutenprint + CUPS v5.2.0'.

If the printer is not connected to the Windows computer, then please describe your current setup - or the type of setup you would like to have.

Regards,

PaHu
