Attempting to copy to the disk failed (MacBook vs. IPod Shuffle)

The other day, I attempted to synch my iPod shuffle with iTunes 7.7.1 and got an error message "Attempting to copy to the disk MicroPod failed. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation".

After this - my iPod wouldn't turn on and couldn't be recognized by MacOS. I tried the available reset tool to no avail.

TONIGHT I purchased a NEW iPod Touch 1GB, plugged it in and got the EXACT SAME ERROR. Before I fry another iPod - can someone please tell me what's going on? This never happened before.

BTW - I'm running Mac OS X (10.5.4).

Same problem here. Started a few weeks ago. iPod 60GB, Mac Pro, iTunes 8.01 and Leopard 10.5.5. Been synching fine for a year. iTunes then ejects the iPod but the iPod hard disk keeps spinning sounding like it was stuck. I had an extended warranty on the iPod so I took it to Best Buy and then sent me a new one. Same problem! So obviously it isn't the iPod.

I've tried most of the "fixes" I could find, repairing permissions, deleting iPhot cache, etc. To no avail.

Any new ideas?

I solved my issue. First successful sync in at least a week! It did involve read / write permissions. I changed the permissions for "everyone" and "staff" for the iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files. Not sure why since permissions for "me" were already set to read and write but this did the trick. I used a mind map to capture the many things I tried and the eventual solution. You can see it or edit it at my blog: http://randomthoughts.johnmichl.com/2008/11/04/success-ipod-sync-and-file-access -problem/
