IPod with plug/outlet display

I received an used 20gb white iPod model number A1059 that was working when I got it. I took it home and plugged it into my laptop running XP Pro. Itunes said that it was formatted for a MAC and needed to be formatted for Windows. I clicked ok to do the format. After a minute the ipod displayed a plug and outlet and that is all it will display now. I've charged it for well over 24 hours. I can make the Apple logo appear by holding down the menu and select button for a little bit, but then it goes right back to the plug and outlet display.
Could someone please help me?

It's asking for a power adapter to ensure there is a reliable source of power while it updates internal software. Apple may have been a bit too over-cautious, as newer iPods don't require a power adapter to complete the Restore process.

I read about this trick to simulate a power-only no-data connection.

I've never done it myself.
