Starbucks ATT WiFi access?

I was in Starbucks yesterday, and WiFi shows (attwifi) as available. I accept that and try to use Safari. It sends me to an ATT Wi-Fi sign in page and asks for an account name and password? I called ATT Wi-Fi customer service at 888-888-7520 but they did not know anything about anything. Newsfeeds say that ATT iPhone customers have free access to Wi-Fi at Starbucks now since Feb/2008. Starbucks now features a $5 cash card that includes wi-fi. What is the real deal and how does this work?

sunblock90,

Twice AT&T has made news with information about WiFi access for iPhone customers, and then retracted it.

The first time it started working without much fanfare. When people noticed it made news. It was stopped shortly after people figured out how to work around it and use the access for free from their computer.

The second time AT&T it showed for about 1 day on one of AT&T's websites, and then was retracted with AT&T said it was a mistake and something under consideration.

If you have AT&T High Speed Internet at home, you may qualify for some free AT&T WiF use per month.

At Starbucks you should be able to access the iTunes Store, and the list of currently playing songs for free.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

More Than 12 Million AT&T, Starbucks Customers to Get Free Wi-Fi Access for a Rich In-Store Experience

New Offering Includes Two Hours of Free Wi-Fi Service Per Day for Starbucks Card Holders Beginning this Spring

All 100,000 U.S.-Based Starbucks Partners to Receive Free Wi-Fi at Starbucks Stores

Seattle, Washington, San Antonio, Texas, February 11, 2008

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) today announced plans to deliver AT&T Wi-FiSM service at more than 7,000 company-operated Starbucks locations across the United States. The initiative brings together two of the most recognizable global brands to create a powerful and convenient online experience for consumers and business customers. Starbucks and AT&T will offer a mix of free and paid Wi-Fi offerings at Starbucks stores to meet the needs of both frequent and occasional Starbucks Wi-Fi customers.

The initiative further expands the AT&T Wi-Fi network, already the largest in the United States, to more than 17,000 U.S. hot spots and more than 70,000 globally.

Beginning this spring, Starbucks Card holders can enjoy up to two hours of free Wi-Fi service per day at Starbucks locations offering Wi-Fi access, while more than 12 million qualifying AT&T broadband and AT&T U-verseSM Internet customers will have unlimited free access to the Wi-Fi service. In addition, more than 5 million of AT&T's remote access services business customers will be able to access Wi-Fi service at Starbucks locations. AT&T will soon extend the benefits of Wi-Fi at Starbucks to its wireless customers.

"People want to stay connected to their world 24/7, and Wi-Fi hot spots, broadband and wireless make that mobility possible," said Rick Welday, AT&T chief marketing officer, Consumer. "Laptops and smartphones give us the online mobility we crave, and now millions of AT&T and Starbucks customers will get Internet access free from the comfort of their neighborhood Starbucks."

"This is what our customers have been waiting for — free Starbucks-quality Wi-Fi," said Chris Bruzzo, chief technology officer, Starbucks Coffee Company. "Through our new partnership with AT&T, we also welcome their millions of current customers who can now come in and enjoy free Wi-Fi as part of their daily Starbucks Experience."

As an added benefit for the more than 100,000 Starbucks partners in the U.S., all Starbucks partners will receive free AT&T Wi-Fi accounts allowing them to use the network in Starbucks company-operated locations offering Wi-Fi access.

"Our new relationship with AT&T gives us the opportunity to expand and enhance the range of digital entertainment experiences for our customers as well as our partners, including the continued rollout of the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store at Starbucks," said Ken Lombard, president, Starbucks Entertainment.

In addition to the free Wi-Fi access for qualifying AT&T customers and any Starbucks Card holder, customers will be able to purchase tiered access to the AT&T Wi-Fi network at Starbucks at attractive price points. For a two-hour period, customers will pay just $3.99 per session. Monthly membership will also be available for $19.99 per month, and will include access to any of AT&T's 70,000 hot spots in 89 countries around the world.

AT&T business customers who subscribe to remote access services can also enjoy unlimited, flat-rate access plans at any Starbucks location offering Wi-Fi service or at other AT&T Wi-Fi hot spots.

Additionally, AT&T is providing Starbucks an enterprise-class network with increased bandwidth and redundancy. AT&T's underlying network technologies will enable a wide range of business applications and help Starbucks stores operate more efficiently.

"Delivering networking capabilities to help a world-class company such as Starbucks achieve greater business velocity is what we do," said Welday. "Our work with Starbucks is collaborative innovation at its finest."

The availability of AT&T Wi-Fi service at Starbucks will take place on a market-by-market basis with store implementation beginning this spring and completed by the end of the year.

According to that (and as far as I know, it has been active in many places)

Two Hours of Free Wi-Fi Service Per Day for Starbucks Card Holders

Starbucks Card holders can enjoy up to two hours of free Wi-Fi service per day

The details are at Starbuck's website which is

When you register your Starbucks Card and use it at least once a month, you'll receive two consecutive hours a day of complimentary Wi-Fi

So, you have to have a Starbucks Card and buy one coffee a month (and keep putting money on the card, or you won't be able to buy anything with it).

There's another thing where it's expected that AT&T will offer free WiFi to iPhone customers specifically, that's not what you've posted the press release for. Just this past weekend, I was able to surf for free at Starbucks, but I think it was just a local one day thing. Maybe they're still looking at the data requirements for such a thing (since iPhone users tend to surf more than any other phone user) to make sure they can handle the demand.

I am very new at using my iphone for things other than a cell. I have heard from other iPhone users that when they had received their AT&T statement that they had an unreal amount due. It was all WiFi or other internet use. I am assuming it is similar to what I have been reading regarding Starbucks.

My question is this. If I should use my internet on my iPhone will I be asked for an account name and password if the service is not free? I guess what I am saying is. I will have the option of either paying for the use of what search engine is available or not using the internet at that time. Or am I using the internet and being charged and not knowing I am being charged?

Again, please know that I do not really understand a lot of this. I am new at this and am learning as I go along.
Thank you for the help.

dogwalker,

There are two things that I have seen surprise people with their bills.

The first bill will have a prorated month, activation fee, and the first full month on it. Mine was just over double what my normal bill is.

The other one is using cellular data internationally. Roaming charges for voice and data are expensive.

As for WiFi Hotspots, they don't bill your cellular account directly, but some offer subscription services for which you may get a separate bill. That does require signing up for their service, providing billing information and agree to the terms.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

Ok, here's your answer: Just go to the following link and sign up; I think you must first have a Starbucks card though (these are 'free' and all you need to do is, for example, go to a store and put five bucks on a card then save the card, as long as you use it once per month, it will let you have free Wi-Fi. I set mine up to re-charge (add some money to it) whenever it is low since I get coffee EVERY day or two. But basically, just go here; it's free:
